Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was reading Jennifer's post about being overwhelmed with Advent and I noticed there are a lot of Advent/Christmas units being offered. I'm getting a bit overwhelmed myself and thought it might help to have all the possible units sectioned together. It's nice to know which ones are out there to pick and choose from (and save for next Advent):

St. Nicholas Unit
Tomie dePaola Unit
Jan Brett Unit
Jesse Tree Unit
Twelve Days of Christmas Unit
Catholic Mosaic December Unit
Saint Observations (St. Nick, Juan Diego, Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Lucia, St. Stephen, etc.)

Which others am I forgetting?

I'll try to supply links later. No time this morning.

Could we also post where to find these units?

Thanks, Cay, for suggesting this!

Great idea, Cay! It's so much easier to think when everything's in one place. I'll try to contribute with some links to your suggestions for starters.

St Nicholas unit
-- St Nicholas flipbook
-- St Nicholas feastday ideas
All provided by Katherine in TX

Tomie de Paola unit
Jan Brett Christmas unit
--provided by Elizabeth Foss.
--- another thread on Jan Brett

Jesse Tree
Advent
Twelve Days of Christmas
Epiphany
Jesse Tree
Catholic Mosaic December preparations -- (there may be another Mosaic thread about December but I couldn't find one)
Our Blessed Mother notebook ideas -- includes some details about the birth of OUr Lord, and Mary's title of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Great idea, Cay. This year, we have to continue with our studies, so we'll be talking and studying a lot with Sarah about A Pioneer Christmas, and a history of Christmas through the U.S.A.

But for our devotions and religion study, we're going to be using A Catholic Mosaic. I want to do a Liturgical Year with Sarah (and the boys), so I'll do the Catholic Mosaic with Sarah, and then use it as a guide with the boys in high school, probably using exerpts from some of the books, and other pieces of literature, etc. throughout the liturgical year, having them put them in their Catholic Faith notebooks under the divider, *The Liturgical Year in the Church*, or something like that.

Using this will start our study, and be a great way to bring Advent and Christmas into our religion as a subject as well, something I need to do for our parish religious instruction anyway.

We're not going to bring too much other Christmas into our studies in terms of "school", other than the Pioneer Christmas study with Sarah, because it'll go well with her history (The Prairie Primer).

This helps a lot! I was feeling so overwelmed trying to choose and now I can see that there really is only 10 or so options.

How many do you think I can handle before I go nutsey? We will be having company over this month as we have 3 birthdays to celebrate so I need to stop 1 project short of going crazy!

Another one I thought of is:

Christmas ARound the World...how different countries and cultures celebrate Christmas.

Thanks for all the links, Wila. I haven't been able to find time to do links.

And for a curriculum to truly ENJOY this season with your family as you prepare for His blessed birth, I found this one: A Holiday Curriculum

I thought it was interesting, as it's slightly tongue in cheek, but gave me something to think about, to remind me just how much they/we truly DO learn by being home and together, particularly this time of the year.

Is there a link to this one? The family Christmas show is going to be Christmas around the World and it would be great to have some ideas.... already "in print" for us!

Huge list of Countries for CATW

Thank you Tracy, for reminding ME of the fact that we are continually learning just working and playing together. Our whole family came down with some rotten cold and we're at all different stages of it. I have put away the math books until after the Three Wise Men have come and gone. Grammar was finished shortly after Thanksgiving. Spelling is, "Well, honey, if you want to do it, you're welcome to it." We're sort of reduced to just trying to survive together.

God bless!

I just thought I'd bump this up a year later. I've been on here using the search engine for ages and thought this was a good one for those members who weren't here last year.

Does anyone know if the Saint Nicholas flip book is still available anywhere? The old link provided gives me an error page.

Thanks!
Candace

How about the "favorites on our shelf + whatever you can find at the library" unit, or the "just reading, snuggling, and baking the cookies and doing the crafts you'd do anyway" unit?"

I was getting stressed out too and that's the one I landed on, LOL.

Candace

The St Nicholas info was on Kathryn's blog (formerly of the Onion Dome) she suggests that we read Serendipity over the next few weeks for upcoming Advent ideas. So it looks like the St Nicholas flip book will be up We did it last year and it was the best thing we ever did
