Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What are some of the old traditions on celebrating the twelve days of Christmas? Is there a good resource for this?

Thanks,

quick off the top of my head...

I know st. Stevens day many people "box" up things to take for donations, food, toys etc. hence "boxing" day.
(how many years did i think canadians just really like violent sports? )

St Johns day it is traditional to Toast "to the love of st. John."

On the feast of holy innocents some people serve something pureed ie baby food at dinner or something red and goey ie the blood of the innocent.

I dont know much about him but St slyvester is for new years eve.

I cant think of anything else but will check back when i am more awake

I'm not sure about specific ideas for traditions, but I thought I'd share a fun read aloud we did last year during that time. The book is The Thirteen Days of Christmas by Jenny Overton.

It's pathetic that I couldn't get this posted before now - 6 weeks ago when this was posted I meant to answer. There are some great old books and articles that cover traditions of this 12 Days of Christmas time period. Several are available on-line. So Merry Christmas everyone!

Christmas to Candlemas in a Catholic Home - Helen McLoughlin
The Twelve Days of Christmas - Elsa Chaney
The Year of the Lord in the Christian Home - Fr. F.X. Weiser (chapter on "From Christmas to Epiphany")

The Year and Our Children - Mary Reed Newland (was recently reprinted by Firefly Press, but looks like it's still hard to find)

And I can't believe I had forgot this particular part of the Catholic Culture website - Twelve Days of Christmas tree with a linked activity/devotion ornament for each day. Very cool!

Bumping this up!

As your celebrate your 12 Days of Christmas...come here and write down what you did.....so we can be more ready for next year...instead of thinking about it on the First Day of Christmas
