Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dear sons have been catching and observing bees. They keep them for a while and then release them only to catch a new set. At least none have escaped in the house and only an occassional sting which doesn't phase the boys. I know - we live dangerously here. Well, they are bringing these critters inside the house and as long as I have to listen to the incessant buzzing (till 7 PM when they look like they die until morning)when they revive and resume the buzzing, I thought we ought to attempt our first "organized" rabbit trail. I want to encourage some sort of project - besides the capturing of bees. Does anyone have recommendations of books, projects, etc. that could be done by dc without a lot of mom time.

Janet

Janet,

You're in luck. We have a few threads already on bees:

Bee Study Discussion

Bee Picture Book

Candlemaking 101

Easter Vigil Notebooks

Easter Eggs Traditions (not directly bees, but beeswax traditions, such as Pysanky eggs)

St. Benedict feast day with his connection of blessing of bees...his old feast was March 24, I believe. Benedictines still celebrate that feastday, in addition to the new August 8.

That should get you started

We did a unit on bees last year as a result of a hive moving into our screech owl nest box.

Books:
Winnie the Pooh (of course!)
By Patricia Polacco:
    The Bee Tree
Thank You, Mr. Faulkner (which isn't about bees, but explains some of the background found in Bee Tree)
    In Enzo's Splendid Garden

Study hexagons in nature (Do you have The Joy of Mathematics?)

Buy Honeycomb cereal.
Buy honey made from different flowers. Taste-test and grade the color, smell, sweetness, texture. Graph results.

Watch Magic School Bus Inside a Beehive video and/or read the book.

We used lots of websites and crossword puzzles for this study, and I've decided that instead of typing them all out and making links out of them, I'll just attach our Word document that lists them all (and the rest of our study). Much easier!

FYI... I used many of the links that Jenn posted.
