Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been meaning to post all month - now it's half over already. But thought it would be good to highlight some of the wonderful picture books out there that cover topics related to famous African- Americans and the history and experiences of African-Americans.

We can post threads by topic for easier searching. Maybe a new one every couple of days with resources beyond picture books for unit study if interested. And then continue next month with Women's History topics. Poetry in April, etc...

Here are some of the past picture book threads on the topic
The Black Community: Saints and Friends
Martin Luther King Jr.
Underground Railroad book
Rosa Parks anniversary
Freedom Summer/Racial Awareness

It's not a picture book, but there is a book called Wagon Wheels, which is an easy reader, about an African American pioneer family. It has been featured on Reading Rainbow.

There is a picture book called Ruby Bridges Through My Eyes. Ruby Bridges was one of the first African American children to attend an integrated school, she is the little girl in the white dress in the Norman Rockwell painting. I would recommend parents use discretion - the "n" word is used. But it was a picture book that I enjoyed myself.
