Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

MaryM mentioned the book, Secret Signs: Along the Underground Railroad by Anita Riggio which is a great tie-in to the sugared eggs. I'm mentioning it here also as it's an interesting idea about how messages may have been passed on the Underground Railroad. The author tied the idea of the increase in deaf awareness and schools in the NorthEast with the abolitionists operating in the same areas .... food for thought!

Mary,
I bought this book at the beginning of the school year when we began our Underground RR study. I simply couldn't pass it up.

January's Sparrow - Even though this is a picture book, please pre-read before giving to your youngsters to make sure you're comfortable with the content/illustrations depicting violence.
Freedom River - this one is good for older kids too -- I'd say 9-12.

Ain't Nobody a Stranger to Me - Ann Grifalconi, Jerry Pinkney, illustrator

Told as a reminiscence of a former slave to his granddaughter many years later. Great story of trust in God and the goodness of others. And if you are a fan of Jerry Pinkney's art, as I am, you'll love that, too.
