Squirrels -- ugh! With apologies to MacBeth and all your other squirrel-lovers -- yuck!
We have one in our new neighborhood -- he came in a hole in the screened window one afternoon and tried to get our bread out of the breadbox. On top of that, he's bold as can be -- doesn't scare easily and I think he's the one who stole 15yod's bike !
Seriously, squirrels in heavily populated areas are annoying rodents; basically rats with furry tails.
Can you tell they irritate me just a bit?

Our squirrels stay in the yard, but I can totally sympathize with you.
The Kids Post in the WAshington Post had a little article on the very thing.

Another wonderful book that I haven't seen mentioned but wanted to add to the recommended list - The Fierce Yellow Pumpkin. It's a never before published story by Margaret Wise Brown (though it has been out for a few years). It's a charming story about a little pumpkin, growing in a field, who longs to be fierce and scare away the mice like the scarecrow. Eventually with the help of some jack-o-lantern carving children he gets his wish. It's very clever and the pumpkin has great personality.

This is another past thread with a great list of fall themed books. Lots of good pumpkins ones, especially.
What's in Your Fall Basket?
And this one with scarecrow books:

There's been a lot of good Fall books published since 2010... anyone have anymore they want to list?!
Snowsong Whistling isn't new but it's still one of my very favorites and should be mentioned in both Fall and Winter threads. Elisa Kleven's illustrations are like eye candy.
Bear Has a Story to Tell. I love the Steads books. It might be silly, but I love how they FEEL... nice thick, creamy paper... a good gentle story.
Leaves looks very sweet. I haven't read it yet, but by all accounts, it seems great for toddlers.
Waiting for Winter This has been mentioned in our snow threads but it's really perfect for late autumn. I am so in love with this book and I cry bitter tears that it is already out of print! Such exquisite art and the story can't be beat... somebody stop me... I just might end up splurging on an OOP copy!!!

Glad you bumped this thread - always such an enjoyable picture book topic to revisit. I really haven't come across that many fantastic new fall picture books in recent years - which is sad. I think some of the better ones have been mentioned in specific subject threads - like apples, scarecrows, pumpkins. We should probably make sure all those threads are linked here. I think several are. Here are the Johnny Appleseed ones:
Johnny Appleseed ?
Your favorite Johnny Appleseed
There is a book I found this year that I thought was really cute and though it covers a whole year it has a fall emphasis for the turning point of the story.
Sophie's Squash (Pat Zietlow Miller) - With her family, a little girl buys a squash/gourd from the farmers market. But she "adopts" it as a pet/doll and they can't eat it. Eventually it starts to get a little soft. She seeks advise at the farmers market on how to help keep it healthy. Lovely lesson in the seasons and cycle of life. It is really funny, too - thoroughly enjoyed it.

I wrote about this one in the Counting Book thread. The focus is counting but the setting is fall as the animals prepare for winter, so it is fitting here as well. Vibrant, engaging illustrations with a cute story and of course the added counting theme.
Baby Bear Counts One (Ashley Wolff)
The Big Snuggle-up (Brian Patten, Nicola Bayley) - It is simple and sweet, with lovely illustrations.
The Very Best Pumpkin (Mark Kimball Moulton) - cute story about raising pumpkins and friendship.
How Big Could Your Pumpkin Grow? (Wendall Minor) - Love the illustrations, fun and unpredictable. Shows pumpkins (larger and larger ones) in unusual settings. The end notes clarify the connections to the pictures by describing the sizes of the locations where the pumpkins are imagined. Very clever size/magnitude lessons.

I just requested that my library purchase the new book: Fall Ball. It looks like something my boys would like very much!

Bumping - looking for more fall books. Good time to curl up with a hot cider and read with littles. Need to find me some littles...
Fall Leaves - Loretta Holland
Nice addition to fall picture books. Pretty and colorful illustrations with simple text that explains what happens in fall. There is a unity through the text of connecting a few theme words in different ways, that is really clever and has double meanings for the season. Enjoyed it.
I have a hold request in for Little Boo which our library has on order. It looks cute.

Winter is Coming (Tony Johnson)
Really sweet and gentle look at the late fall as winter approaches. Seen through the eyes of a young girl/nature explorer. Would be great to promote nature study. Girl is out watching the natural world with sketch pad (nature journal) and binoculars. Love the illustrations of award winning artist, Jim LaMarche. Thumbs up.
