Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The canonization of Fr. Damien of Molokai is taking place this Sunday in Rome.
My older children were very impressed with the life of this holy priest when we watched the movie Molokai: The Story of Father Damien. After watching the movie, we went on a little rabbit trail and found this fascinating letter written by Robert Louis Stevenson to defend Fr. Damien (many people in his day believed leprosy was the result of an immoral life, so not only did he serve lepers and suffer leprosy himself, he also endured this vicious accusation from many). In it, he predicts that Fr. Damien will one day be canonized (when he refers to the "devil's advocate" trying to dig up the worst of Fr.'s life).

I included some of the materials and resources we are using for Bl. Damien's canonization study in this thread:October 2009 Canonizations - Resources

Other past threads:
Saint Damien
Blessed Damien Feast Day

Speaking of Robert Louis Stevenson, he also wrote this poem about Bl. Marianne Cope, who also served the Hansen's Disease patients in Hawaii, and assumed charge of Father Damien’s Boys’ Home after his death.

Quote:
Reverend Sister Marianne
Matron of the Bishop Home, Kalaupapa

To see the infinite pity of this place,

The mangled limb, the devastated face,

The innocent sufferers smiling at the rod,

A fool were tempted to deny his God.

He sees, and shrinks; but if he look again,

Lo, beauty springing from the breast of pain!—

He marks the sisters on the painful shores,

And even a fool is silent and adores.

Robert Louis Stevenson
