Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm so excited to see this announcement today about Blessed Damien.
He will become St. Damien on Oct. 11.

I posted in the book club that I had just read his biography and was so moved by how incredibly brave and selfless he was. The book goes into all the details that a brief article leaves out, and wow- he was an incredible example of "love your neighbor".

I am very happy, too! I love Hawai'ian history and the story of this stubborn, dedicated man has always fascinated me.

Thanks for pointing this out - that is great news. When I went looking for the names of the other blessed who will be canonized this year, I found this news article about what might be likely to happen to Kalaupapa (the penninsula where Bl. Damien and Bl. Marianne Cope cared for the lepers) when the last patients are deceased.

I missed this post earlier, but saw the official news from the Vatican today 10 Blesseds to be canonized. I love Father Damien!

Jeanne Jugan is also on the list. Very exciting.

That one is exciting for us here as well - her sisters have a home for the aged here and many of the homeschool families are active in volunteer work there. They sent out an email yesterday to all of us - they are very excited!

We've been doing the happy dance about Fr. Damien here too. Both of Joseph's names are after him.

I saw a litte of this movie in the "airport" (a 3 sided shelter) on Molokai. It was filmed there so you can see what it really looks like. Molokai

We also love Blessed Damien...my daughter was born on his feast day...but we didn't think "Mary Damien" would work...we opted for "Mary Karol".

I LOVE the movie "Damien of Molokai"...we got it through Netflix a few years ago...so powerful...truly amazing. My favorite scene was him going to "confession"...and the humility he must have had in literally shouting his sins from one boat to another (because the priest hearing his confession did not want to risk infection of leprosy)...granted, he spoke in French to make his confession more "private"...but still...humility humility.

Yes! And I also thought about how much he depended on the grace of the sacrament. Infrequent confession was one of his biggest complaints. What a witness.
