Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm not a frequent poster, but I have a question. My 4.5 year old daughter recently informed us she wants to be an Animal Rescuer (ala Deigo style) when she grows up. She doesn't want to save people, only animals

My husband attributes this to the way story books make animals seem soooo human. He is concerned about it; I'm not so concerned. She is our oldest child - so new territory here. But it seems like it might be a stage to me.

Any suggestions for good kid books that make PEOPLE more important than animals.....

Thanks,
Emily

Hi Emily and happy to see you posting here. I've been thinking about your post and have thought of two things that might help.

Some of my children are naturally more attracted to animals than others. All of my children have read children's books (many of the same books) yet I have one child who couldn't care less about animals and I have one who absolutely loves them. The two others are in between. I just think that a person's level of attraction to animals may be part of who they are, KWIM?

Also, like you pointed out, children do go through stages and this stage might go as quickly as it came. My guess is that your little girl is a caring person and does care and is concerned for people, she is just currently expressing her ability to care through animals.

As for specific book recommendations, here are a few quick ones from my book shelf:

People-centered:
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
I Can (and other books) by Helen Oxenbury
We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michel Rosen

People interacting with animals as animals:
Carl Goes Shopping (and other books) by Alexandra Day
Peter in Blueberry Land by Elsa Beskow

Love,

Here are some factual animal titles that we enjoy and actually use for science reading in first and second grade.

Getting to Know Nature's Children ~ there's a whole big set of these. We have many of the older version in hardcover. We bought them at thrift stores.

National Geographic For Young Explorers is another series, again found at thrift stores.

Those show animals in their natural elements and BEING the animals they are. One more PEOPLE-oriented book that still contains animals we have loved is The Raft.

Completely people books are books like: Miss Rumphius, Roxaboxen, The Ox-Cart Man

Maybe I should just refer you to the Five in a Row booklist. Some of these might be beyond your daughter, but it's easier to browse library shelves with this list in hand.
