A gentl, lovely way to introduce animals (geographically based) is with the new reprint of D'Aulaire's Book of Animals that the NY Review-Children's Collection has just published.

This book has all the beauty that D'Aulaire books are famous for and the ability to start TONS of rabbit trails. The book is printed as one big long sheet, showing animals found at the equator, those found at the mid-climate range (like where we live), and then artic animals. The pictures are gorgeous. The other side of the fold-out is black/white and tells what the animals sound like. This is not high-science here, but just a gorgeous way to get, especially the littles, interested in looking more at animals.
