Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A friend of mine has a sister who homeschools her children, but only started recently. I think she uses Seton for her curriculum.

She now needs a US History and a Civics/Economics course for her two oldest daughters, age junior and sophomore in high school.

I have no experience, so I'm hoping for some helpful advice. Most of her schooling experience is out of the box, so piecing something together isn't a perfect fit...but perhaps a few sources might work.

Could you pass on recommendations for spines, full courses, add-ons, living books or any other suggestions? Thanks so much.

MODG has a high school Government and Economics syllabus that looks good to me. The Government reading seems different from what someone might mean by "Civics". I have not used this syllabus, but looking at the books that are to be used it seems to be about the ideas behind why our nation's government/constitution is as it is, based on reading sources such as The Federalist Papers and the Anti-Federalist Papers (arguments from the time that counter what the Federalist Papers are pushing for). The tension between those two groups is a fine lesson in the art of politics.

I don't think that is what someone means by a Civics course, though. I might be wrong; I don't know exactly what your friend has in mind to teach. To me, when I think Civics, I think more like: how a bill becomes a law; how does the Electoral College work, that sort of thing.

Maybe if you were to explain a little more of what your friend wants to be sure her children learn about the topic, I could think of what sources might be helpful; I feel like my response might be speaking to something other than what she wants.

Thanks, MaryM. I should have looked first...I got back from vacation with that request and just wanted to post it before I forgot.

Jenn,
We're using Whatever Happened to Penny Candy for economics and I ordered a Government unit study from Amanda Bennett's site a couple years ago ( www.unitstudy.com ). It's Christian based. We only got through the first section of it and stopped. I'd really like my 7th/8th grader to finish it.
