We are really into picture books about birds that give a phonetic sound of the bird call.   We have a few on the Robin, but would love it if you know of any others to share with us. I have neat books and gadgets with bird call recordings - I'm really looking for picture books that describe a particular bird's call phonetically. Ex: Robin -- cheer-up-cheerilee, cheer-up-cheerilee.

Please share any picture books like this that you know of!

My dd says she learned her bird calls through the Peterson field guide, Birds of Eastern North America (in addition to the gadgets.) I've got her thinking about picture books and will be back if anything comes to mind!

Oh good - because this is really for my 3yo and 6yo....and I fear that the Peterson field guide wouldn't engage them for long. Still, it's a good reminder and I could just keep it at hand and when we read about a particular bird or see it out the window, refer to it then. It's just so much easier to learn in the context of a story, and my kids are clamoring for more. Unlike searching for other picture books on particular topics, I haven't had luck searching for "phonetic sounds of birds in picture books".     Maybe I should use different search terms?

We read My Spring Robin all year long because the kids just love the little bit at the end when the child recognizes the Robin's call of cheer-up-cheerilee. I just know there have to be other picture books out there like this on other birds!

Darn, I know I've read several in the past that would fit this request. Just can't remember which. I'll keep thinking which books might have that. The one's I'm thinking don't have that as a focus, just a part of the story woven into the text. Is that what you are looking for or something more focused on teaching the calls?

Oh, and do you have other's you've already come across in addition to My Spring Robin to get the list started?

Jen- have I got a book for you!

Bird Calls (Hear and There)

It has sound, spellings, flaps to lift and tabs to pull. The illustrations are beautiful. Perfect for 3 and 6.

I received it as a gift for my ds years and years ago, and it has held up beautifully. I think it was what really sparked his passion for birds.

ETA: Each flap has a short riddle about the bird on the front, then you lift it to see more info and learn about the call. Then you pull the tab on the next page to make the bird materialize in its nest. So cool!

Exactly! That's EXACTLY what I'm looking for - more story, with the phonetic call as part of the story.

Oh, I hope you remember a few, Mary!

Bird Calls covers 8 common birds and plays a sampling of bird's call (less than stellar sound quality, but then our book is about 8 years old!), but under the large/page-size flap image of the bird is a short little bit about the bird. It's written more in a narrative form, so not just scientific blurby, and woven into each narrative bird info is the phonetic call of the bird.

Our State Birds by Mary Curtis (1947) - not technically a picture book, but each of the state birds includes a short and well written chapter that's really written in quite an engaging way (even my little people stay quite engaged when this book is read aloud!) and many of the phonetic sounds of the bird calls are given. (Alaska and Hawaii were not states at the time this book was published)

Birds, Nests and Eggs by Mel Boring is a young person's field guide with simple explanations. It's not really what I'm looking for at all (not a picture book with story), but it does have some phonetic bird call sounds.

Cross posting with you, Melinda!!!    We're on the same wavelength - we have this one! It IS very good and the little info about each bird is really surprisingly well written for a book of this type. My kids love it and we read it all.the.time. Thus the post BEGGING for other book titles on this topic!

I'm really hoping there are some picture books that are more story than scientific info. Know of any of those, Melinda?

Ok, I just ransacked our bookshelves, and I'm amazed that most of the picture books I have don't have calls! We have the one that Melinda linked, though, and the boys like it. (In fact, I put it on the table so I could link it for you, walked in the other room, and immediately began hearing bird calls when certain boys were supposed to be doing their chores!)

I also found one: Cardinals, Robins, and Other Birds (A Golden Junior Guide) that shares calls for some birds, but not others. It has some quite nice illustrations, though.

Did you see this one on the Amazon page for Bird Calls, Jen?

Sounds of the Wild: Birds

It's apparently a pop-up book.

And this one looks like exactly what you want:

Bird Talk by Ann Jonas

For somewhat older kids (and I know this isn't what you asked for, but I can't resist adding it because we've had such good luck with the Scientists in the Field series):

Secrets of Sound: Studying the Calls of Whales, Elephants, and Birds

Like I said, not what you asked for, but if an older child was interested, might be a good book to throw on the couch...

I've seen it - wasn't really looking for another audio recording book because we do have the Bird Identiflyer and really like that!

Oh it is, Angela!!!    That one is definitely a keeper!!!

You know, that's really worth looking into. Sarah is reading Gene Stratton Porter's The Song of the Cardinal and really enjoys it. There's a good bit of the *why* the cardinal sings as it does. This book you recommend could be a really good tie-in.

I found some other possibles - jump in if you have a review of any of these. Only found one picture book though.

Birdsongs by Betsy Franco - picture book that looks perfect, but reviews state that birds are mis-identified throughout the book.

Not picture books, but still look like they have a lot of potential:
The Songs of Wild Birds by Lang Eliot

Possibles for older children:
Songbirds: How To Attract Them and Identify Them by Noble Proctor

Field Book of Wild Birds and Their Music by F. Matthews - how come I can find all this neat stuff for older children/adults? This one looks fantastic, but there's little actual info. Written in 1904, it is a guide to birds songs.

Well, the books in the series are upper elementary level as far as reading goes, but the ones we've read have been really excellent. I really like showing the kids how scientists DO science, and these books are great for that.

Oh, and I thought of another book... but I found it in a doctor's office waiting room and don't own it, so I *think* I remember that it has bird song in it, but I can't go back and check.

Baltimore Orioles by Barbara Brenner

I do seem to remember that it wrote out the song (and remarked on the LOUDNESS of it, which I can attest to! ), but it's a nice book anyway. I was very surprised to find it at our doctor's office!!

I've got several that I think I'm remembering, but don't want to send you on a wild goose chase, so am going to check them first and so just requested a bunch from the library. I should be able to get back to you by the end of the week.

There is also United Tweets of America - super fun book that we've discussed here and here. Some of the bird/state pages do have the call - though not all. Definitely worthwhile for any bird lover.

I've seen this one I think - but don't remember it well enough. I love Steve Jenkins illustrations! I'll check it out since the library has a copy.

Here is a definite. It's been a long since I read this one, but the Audrey Wood books are generally very good.
Birdsong - Audrey Wood

Oh, and of course, I wanted to add that so many books that are about owls have the owl call in them. Had to remember which ones - Owl Moon does - just checked...

That looks like a beautiful book. This thread makes me want to pull out a bunch of bird books for the little boys!
