How did I miss this thread before?

I *loved* them. Until one of them somehow made it into our home 16 years ago, and into our laundry chute and INTO OUR LAUNDRY. I found him, dead, when I went down to wash clothes, and screamed my head off and couldn't stop screaming for half an hour.

I love them now ONLY IN BOOKS. (2-yo's favorite right now is Squirrel Nutkin, that annoying scamp!) Otherwise, keep them away from me please.

I missed this before too!

I love squirrels, though probably not quite as much as Theresa.

Willa's pic of fostering the squirrel is so sweet! My grandparents fostered a squirrel in Alabama. We have pics of the squirrel sitting on my mom's shoulder. They used to have to lock it up in the bathroom when guests came because it would attack anyone that wasn't part of the family. Better than a guard dog!

Oh, how fun, Jen! Another fun game to watch for at garage sales is The Squirrel Game. It's kind of like HiHo Cherry-O. Very cute and fun.

Uhgg...two "cute" squirrel games ...need to shift this thread back to the sneaky, invasive focus of squirrels...

See what they do? - come right up on your table and help themselves...no, it does not matter that I left all those pumpkin guts out on the table myself...

Ha!
I knew it! You are a closet squirrel-lover, Mary! Are you ready to go back and change your vote now?

I should have completed my thought with:
no, it does not matter that I left all those pumpkin guts out on the table myself...inadverantly inviting the thieving varmits onto my patio table.

I was lazy not generous.

I have to tell you, I voted CUTE!! Because I don't have to live with their bad behaviour!       They can stay perpetually cute!

I deepened my love and facination for these critters through Dawn's blog, we would have her squirrel photos as desktop images.

I saw one once...I was 16, I had won a trip to Disneyland for the family, we drove to Calico and I saw one!!! Wow, it made my trip to the USA...that and the hummingbird hovering over a bush at the Beverly Hills Golf Club...see, you never forget the place and time of facinating nature experiences like that!

OH, Mary, I think you've not come to terms with your deep down looove of squirrels...why else would you leave pumpkin out? You know them well enough to know they'd find it...

Our squirrels here are really odd. I found them nibbling on an old bleached turtle shell that we kept on our deck. Nature eating my nature study! Now that *was* sad.

I am fascinated by the squirrels and their activity, but can't stand them. We have way too many, and basically it's hard to coexist. I think I mentioned before but some neighbor around here feeds them peanuts.

They must be close, because we found a full plastic bag in my yard -- I hope they aren't coming HERE to feed them.

Giving them food like that creates more of a frenzy, and then they keep looking for handouts from humans.

Anyway, we're not fond of them. My MIL got so excited because there is a black squirrel in her neighborhood. Must be rare or something.

I think she was disappointed in our response, or lack of. We weren't impressed. Yep, he's black, but he's still a squirrel.

She only sees a few squirrels in her yard, anyway. Her pests are chipmunks.

We have the most adorable, *teeny-tiny* red squirrels here in Sitka. After growing up/living most of my life in the South East with relatively humongous gray squirrels, these guys are an absolute delight--like something out of a Disney cartoon! Tell me all you Westerners, is it just here on this island, or are all red squirrels so tiny and adorable? Mary, yours looks pretty big! You must "forget" and leave foodstuffs on that table often!

My dh always hated the black squirrels that apparently took over Detroit. He says that they are mean and nasty compared to regular city squirrels.

We see them all the time while driving ds to his school in Detroit. I never have had the opportunity to watch them very closely. It is weird that they haven't migrated to our area. I wonder what might be keeping there? I see a "squirrel" trail, to learn the differences between the black and gray/brown critters.

We just love our squirrelly friends, from "Bob" (whose tail was shortened) to Marilyn (a strange-looking blonde!)

Off to the library!

Oh, very quickly, here is a little info I found. It seems it is a difference, purely in melanin, between black and gray squirrels (they are all considered gray.)

This University of Illinois site provides some answers. We have both the gray and fox squirrels in our yard, but the fox ones are so fast they are hard to observe; they seem to know when we are peeking from behind the curtains! And, the Project Squirrel is open to everyone, nation-wide (even includes Canada!) I know my boys will get a kick out of this.

Ok, now we are off to the library!

OK - this totally cracked me up. Shared by my son, so I had to share it here.
