Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well obviously I think little about them
But I'm fascinated, so are they really classified as rodents? and can you really shoot them, they are not protected or anything?

There are no squirrels in Australia???

Depends on where you live. In the city, we can't shoot anything!

Squirrels are indeed in the order Rodentia, but are in a separate suborder (Sciuromorpha) from rats and mice (Myomorpha).
So they are not all that closely related, in fact no more so than, for instance, cats and dogs, which are both in the same order Carnivora, but separate suborders (Feliformia and Caniformia, respectively).
And I do not believe most squirrels are protected by law, but some are, including the Federally endangered Delmarva Peninsula fox squirrel, the Carolina northern flying squirrel and the Virginia northern flying squirrel. In addition, there are several squirrels which are threatened or "species of concern" such as some ground squirrels and certain variants such as the white squirrel in NC.
So, needless to say, harming them would be a bad thing.

Well, I know in City of Denver you could trap them, but not transport them or kill them (believe me, we looked into it). If you trapped them, you could call animal control and they'd come pick up ... I don't know if technically they're "rodents" but psychologically, yep!

Here you go Mary.. justification...

Squirrel Causes House Explosion
Quote:
A HOUSE FIRE IN CENTERVILLE, IOWA, SUNDAY morning generated an explosion that sent six people to the hospital including four firefighters and an off-duty firefighter. The blaze began just before 9 am while the elderly resident was out for her morning walk. After investigation it has been determined that a squirrel on a utility pole created a short that blew the transformer. The short circuit sent a 7,600-volt surge into the house and started the fire.

con't

eta - I find it absolutely hilarious that this showed up on a website my dh frequents just at this time.

Loathe .

Scorpions, gila monsters, tarantulas, skunks, diamondback snakes, sea gulls, pigeons, mice...bring 'em on. Not squirrels    .

Let's delve deep into my psychology ...I grew up in a city in PA in a house with a yard and some squirrels. I was neutral about them.

I moved out west and somewhere along the way that changed. The breaking point came when I was at Monterey Bay, many years ago, looking at the beautiful ocean from the edge of a gorgeous cliff... when to my horror I realized it was infested with squirrels and they were surrounding me!...I felt faint and my dh had to CARRY me out, kicking at them...DEEsgusting!

I'm OK now. Really. Thanks for bringing up the topic of squirrels .

Love,

I don't mind them, but my dh would love a Yankee Flipper like this video.

One of my dh's cousin married someone from Australia. When his family came to visit the U.S., his brother was simultaneously terrified by and fascinated with squirrels. Even at the zoo. They got a big kick out of it.

I wonder if I will be banned from the board if I admit that I have raised and released many orphan baby squirrels over the years.

I took them all to your yard, Mary, to set them free.

But, seriously, they are the cutest darn things when they are holding onto a little bottle with both paws for dear life and eating as fast as they can. You see, they really love milk (OK, puppy milk replacer) but no one gives them that when they are grown, so they are forced to scavenge at bird feeders. Yeah....

And, if you didn't have squirrels, just think how your yards would be over run with a bazillion oak trees growing everywhere.

Not in Colorado - oak not native here (except Scrub Oak in the hills)

OK, OK baby ones are cute...but really it's the atrocious behavior and bad manners...

Oddly enough, that's one of the things I love best about them.
