Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Here are some activity ideas for celebrating the Ascension:

* In some countries, there is a tradition of walking to the top of a hill and picnicing on the Feast of the Ascension.   Another twist on this tradition would be to blow bubbles from the top of a hill or just in your backyard. What a wonderful visual for young children as their bubbles rise upward!

* Ascension coloring page: www.sermons4kids.com/ascension_colorpg.htm

* Make clouds. Have the kids draw clouds (or draw them in advance) on heavy white paper. Let them glue cotton balls onto the paper to make fluffy clouds. Hang the clouds on the wall, from the dining room chandelier, or from the ceiling.

* Table top Ascension. Print out the Ascension coloring page above onto heavy stock. Color the figures and cut them out. Place Jesus in the clouds you made suspended over your dining room table. Place the disciples on the table under the clouds.

Hope this helps!

You can begin the novena to the Holy Spirit.

After Jesus' Ascension into heaven, he told his disciples to pray together in the upper room and devote themselves to constant prayer. So the Apostles, and Blessed Virgin prayed together for days concluding in the Descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.

A 9 day novena would technically go from Friday May 22-Saturday May 30. But I think we are going to start ours on the Ascension Night.

We love letting go a bouquet of white balloons up in the sky. White and rising-both symbolic-and oh so much fun!!!

Followed by white cupcakes, of course!!

A Benedictine Sister I once knew took her kindergarten class out to fly kites for the Feast of the Ascension. My neighbor and I just finished making the kites (it's after 11 PM...nothing like planning ahead!!) If this tradition catches on I think it will be a wonderful experience for the children to build their own kites...I'm looking forward to going to the park tomorrow with my children and the neighbors!!!

Happy Feast to all of you! Dena
