I have a couple of very hands on, creative learners and I am trying to decide between these two programs for next year. I will be getting the CHC lesson plans for G2 & G4 so I will have their suggested activities to do with the Faith & Life series. And my now G4 daughter did enjoy the G1 CHC lesson plans, but would she of like Image of God better since she is hands on?
I have also used the Who Am I? series and didn't like those...so will we not like the Image of God too?
Any comparison would be helpful.

We have never tried the Image of God series but have been using Faith and Life for years.

I also have kids that are very hands-on and found it a struggle to not have catholic hands-on materials in the areas that I needed them. So out of frustration I began to make them myself. My friends found out about them, liked them and.... our business was launched last year. If you're looking for catholic hands-on materials check it out. I think they should supplement any curriculum

Sorry I can't compare F&L with Image of God

but we do enjoy the F&L Series. However, I suppplement it heavily with lots of fun hands-on stuff and my kids love their religion class.

I haven't seen Image of God but we used Faith and Life and it wasn't hands on. Read, answer questions, and color or do a puzzle in the activity guide. We enjoyed it for a few years.
Have you looked at the Home Catechesis books by Moira Farrell? Now those, are hands on!!! My kids enjoyed the presentations a lot.

Can you tell me where to find the Home Catechesis books? I haven't heard of them.

I like Image of God but have only used 2 levels so far- 1 and 2. It has cute hands on stuff and is really written for the daily use which homeschoolers may prefer. I dont have experience with F&L.

I used gr 2 for FHC prep for ds1 and did a notebook like Elizabeth's, only used the chapters as guidelines for our pages bc we didnt have an Atrium and it worked GREAT.

Is there a lot of stuff for me to make if I get the Mass Kit? I have time to do lessons and pull stuff together, but not time to create stuff. I found an old post where the author was sewing up things.
Is this something that is typically done over a year, or do you spread it out more?

I remember the Mass kit helped a lot with prep. The altar cloths were easy to make.
For a lot of the presentations I didn't get as fancy as some ladies can--I borrowed things and people(from Little People sets or even our nativity set). I would find pictures online, cut them out and paste to cardstock and they would also be people we needed. Or doves. Or whatever.
I tried to make it easy on myself and we had fun!

I have both series and use both. The F&L series is nice in that you hand it to them, they read it, they narrate. Then when we want more, more to discuss, ponder or to think about we do some Image of God. In the upper grades there is some great great saint articles each lesson. Also I think it is either the 5th or 6th grade version which does a wonderful job with the OT.

If I had to choose one over the other, it would depend on how much time I wanted to put towards religious book work. For less time spent, F&L, for more time spent, IOG.

Just a question about the Image of God series. Do you have to buy the teacher manual or is the student book enough?

For the littles I like the TM because it provides the lesson, whereas their books are just the coloring page or puzzle or craft directions.

The olders, not so much. Those TM's really are duplicates of the student books, with smaller print, less pictures, not consumable, but it has the answers, and a few sidebar comments, like ideas to focus on, think more about and even an art project here or there.

We really enjoy Image of God for littles and Faith and life for 3rd grade and on. I have the new Teacher's manuals for Faith and Life, and found them worthwhile (and I am not ussually a teacher guide person) They have a lot of great activities to expand on the lessons. They are not inxpensive but can usually be found used on Cathswap.

Having used both, I also recommend sticking with F&L for the upper grades. Image of God is fantastic for K-2nd, but after that, it becomes very schooly. Lots and lots of paragraphs of reading and discussion questions, but not anything like the "tell a story and have a discussion" style of the primary grades.

With Image of God, you DO need the teacher manuals for the younger grades. The student textbooks are really the optional items at the PreK, K, 1, & 2 levels. The TM's have all the stories. The optional "resource binder" (a third book) has some good ideas for teaching to a group but not likely needed by the home teacher.
With grade 3 and up you can mostly do without the TM because there is so much text in the student book.

With F&L it is the opposite. You really don't need the TM's unless you want them for the extra ideas on discussion illustrations and the quizzes/unit tests. Again, there are free fill-in-the-blank quizzes to download on the F&L website.

Thanks LeeAnn, that is exactly what I was needing to know. I don't think the schooly nature would work for my 4th grader.
So looks like we will stick with the Faith & Life and add in some of Joy's stuff and maybe the Home Catechesis.
