Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Every year for at least the last four yrs...I plan to tackle exercise and weight loss....and here I am again, ANOTHER new year, doing the same thing...only I think there may be ten more pounds to deal with.

I am only motivated intellectually...not physically, mentally or emotionally or any other way

I need to lose about 35 pounds to get to a WAY better place for me....which is still about 22 pounds above my OLD ideal weight. I am not even going to try to attain that weight.

I have physical symptoms which will be helped by exercise and weight loss:

the breathing problem I mentioned in a prayer request, heels and general foot pain, sleep issues, low energy, low stamina, more frequent headaches and occ. tummyaches. I feel like a mess.....I have got to do SOMETHING.

I CAN do this....but I am too tired and too lazy to do it. I just do not want to work for it.

I have been signed up at Curves for a few yrs...but between illnesses and travel and driving kids to the college daily...I just am not getting there enough for it to be consistently helpful.

I HAVE to make changes. Anyone else feel in the same boat? I just do not want to go at it alone. And, since you all are my major source of friends ...I come to you.

I thought maybe a group of us could be cheerleaders for each other. I have one goal to start with regarding weight loss:

Lose 15 pounds by my birthday, which is April 25th. I know the first 5-10 pounds will be easy because since I am doing NO exercise and not eating enough raw foods.....just a few changes will cause things to move quickly...after that, I am hoping that the 15 lb weight loss and increase in exercise (and thus energy) and ability to breathe will be enough motivation to continue to chase after more weight loss, more health....please, God.

To be honest, it is not really the loss of weight I am after at all, but a general improvment in health. I just know that I will have to have weight loss in order to find that improvement.

Also, I hate knowing that the weight around my tummy means I am at higher risk for not being here for my kids or grandkids in the future. That is a painful thought.

Krisann is my hero. She is inspires me.

I will not be following any specific diet plan...I personally do not believe in the majority of weight loss books/programs out there, for ME....though I will admit, WW has been tempting this last year, esp while following the WW thread. My sister is about to sign up....and I think my dad would pay for me, too...I will wait and see about that.

I just want this thread to be a general support group effort to make our accomplisments no matter how we plan to accomplish our goals.

Do you want to try this with me?

We can have a goal of 15 pound loss by April 25th.

Here is a form to fill out, if you want (copy and paste and then fill in):

Age:

Overall weight-loss goals:

Exercise plans for yourself:

Dietary changes you see your self making:

Physical symptoms currently suffering, and looking for improvement:

Any other comments:

We can use this thread for support in any way we need it.

We can also pair ladies up for phone partners in doing this, too, if you want someone to actually "talk" to in real life...and to pray for each other, too. Let me know. Robynn, you will be MY phone partner , regardless. We CAN do this TOGETHER.

If this takes off, let us look for a patron saint to use for our group. I will re-name the thread after the saint. I am just using this subject heading to get your attention.

Anyone in???

Well, I'm in! I'm in week 2 of Weight Watchers right now, but I'm really trying to change bad, I mean really bad, bordering on gluttonous, habits. My family history is not so great wrt diabetes and high chol. heart disease and a bunch of other ugly stuff. So far, so good. Plus, all my weight tends to be in my belly, too, with all those related risks.
It's funny you suggested 15 lbs by 4/25. My anniversary is 4/26, and that's my goal!

So, here goes:
Age: 34
Weight loss goal: at least 25 lbs
Exercise plan: this one is tough because I've been suffering with Plantar Fasciitis for months, so it's difficult to even get out for a brisk walk---ouch!
Dietary changes: the biggest one is portion control, quickly followed by salad and veggies with every dinner.
I think this is a great idea!

I'm in.

Age: 37

Overall weight-loss goals: 25 pounds

Exercise plans for yourself: Oh, dear. Walking, mostly. My knees/ankles/legs can't handle much more. Swimming as soon as weather permits.

Dietary changes you see your self making: I eat horribly.    I do best for losing weight when staying away from white bread/white pasta. Which also happens to be my favorite type of food, of course.

Physical symptoms currently suffering, and looking for improvement: IBS, Anxiety, IBS, Fatigue, IBS, Headaches, and oh did I mention, IBS?

Any other comments: I do eat horribly. I know I need to do something about it. I struggle, because eating can actually cause an IBS attack....so sometimes I will go all day without eating, which plays havoc on my bloodsugar. Also, what to do? Raw foods are so healthy physically, but the hardest on my poor inflamed system (same with whole grains, etc.) The foods I need for weight loss HURT. The foods that don't hurt my insides, hurt my outsides. I feel stuck.

I am kind of mad.....I just wrote all of this below, maybe more...and IE shut down on me just as I was ready to post! Argh! (Ack! It happened twice!   This time I saved it all as I was writing! Phew!) Starting over......

Age: 43, till April 25th

Overall weight-loss goals: 35 pounds

Exercise plans for yourself: I will use my treadmill 1/2 hr a day, working up to 1
hr a day (reading aloud to the kids) by Ash Wednesday (you know, I plan this EVERY year at this time...and I
always get bronchitis and it messes me up ...I already had bronchitis in
October...maybe that will be enough for now) AND I will start a "walking club" with
my kids since they are ten and up except for one, so they get used to the idea of
daily and purposeful exercise NOW and not when they are desperate, like me. I will
do one of these, 5 days a week, hopefully with weekends off.

Also, instead of failing to get to Curves three times a week, which has been my goal, I
will now try to aim for TWO days a week, at a regularly scheduled time.

Since I often work a couple of days a month/week, I need to be flexible about my
timing. Esp since I cannot count on the same schedule.

Dietary changes you see your self making: I plan to eat more raw foods. I hope to
eat at least one salad, preferably two, a day, with chicken or boiled eggs as the
protein in my salad. I plan to pay my 14yo dd $20 a month to keep me in supply with
fresh salads. I will not take the time to do it for myself, but she is willing. I
also want to make sure to get five servings of fruit a day....aiming for at least
three to start.

No more sweet treats, once my Christmas chocolate is gone

beverages: 1-2 cups of tea a day, and only water (not hard, that is already what I do)

Physical symptoms currently suffering, and looking for improvement:

the breathing problem I mentioned in a prayer request, heels and general foot pain,
sleep issues, low energy, low stamina, more frequent headaches and occ.
tummyaches....I had forgotten about blood sugars...I have been hypo-glycemic since
my teens.....severely, and with a couple of prgenancies.....and though research does
not support it as being pre-diabetic....most specialists feel that it is...and I
kind of do, too.

Any other comments:

I plan to re-read Outsmarting the Mid-Life Fat Cell by Deborah Waterhouse. I have read several of her books and her advice and info seems really sound. A Reg. Dietician friend of mine says Waterhouse is a pioneer. I would love it if you could read along with me. You can get her book from the library, or from half.com. We can highlight ideas from the chapters. Her books are not weight-loss books, but books to understand why the female body works the way it does, and how to work with it, and sometimes around it.

TASKS FOR WEEK OF 1/7:

1. Measure your upper arms, bust, abdomen, hips, thigh and calves before Monday the 14th...no need to post, just hide the numbers in your underwear drawer or tape it in your closet behind your clothes. We will re-measure each month, first weekend...as losing inches is very satifying, sometimes more than pounds. If I forget to remind for the measuring....feel free to remind us.

2. Get a baseline weight. They say you should not measure your weight daily, just once a week. But, I have also seen it said, that some people do much better losing weight if they see the measurement daily. Do what works for YOU....keeping in mind that day-to-day fluctuations up and down are normal.

3. Look over your daily and weekly lives, and see where you can schedule some exercise in...think small and short if you must, but find time, and START! Let's plan to start this coming Monday, the 14th.

4. Between now and Monday, try to prepare your kitchens to make your dietary changes possible.

5. If able, plan to join us for a 54 Day Rosary Novena to include our intentions for improved health, especially using this support group.

6. Talk to your family members about your goals and ask for their help and prayers. Does anyone want to do this with you? Anyone willing to help keep the fridge stocked with prepared foods? Help with keeping littles happy while you exercise?

Tell your spouses how important this is to you....and to the general health of your family, both in the short and long term.

That is probably enough to think about

Any comments? Anything to add?

Here's a lurker joining in too!

Age: 39 (until May 25)

Overall weight-loss goals: 40 pounds to start (I really need to lose twice that much)

Exercise plans for yourself: walking outside as Midwest weather permits, treadmill 30 min./day otherwise, playing outside with the kids more

Dietary changes you see your self making: PORTION CONTROL! Eating more fruits
and veggies, cutting out the soda and drinking more water.

Physical symptoms currently suffering, and looking for improvement: bad knees, fatigue

Any other comments: I am also in week 2 of following Weight Watchers on my own. My daughter is very good at minding everybody else's business, so I have given her the task to check my daily points used

This is a neat idea. I am not sure there were any saints who dealt with weight problems. We could name it after St. Gianna She was rather elegant, active and an average, healthy looking weight. She was also a wife and mother, wanting to look nice for her husband and take care of her children, like us.

Age: 43

Overall weight-loss goals: 20 pounds

Exercise plans for yourself: Haven't figured that out yet.   Maybe I can walk when the weather is clear and walk the stairs in my house in bad weather.

Dietary changes you see your self making: More water, less coffee, no eating after dinner, ice cream once a week only.

Physical symptoms currently suffering, and looking for improvement: headaches and fatigue

Any other comments: I have not physically recovered all the way from my miscarriage and D&C way back in November. I am spending way too much time sitting.

ETA: I changed the weight-loss goal. Losing 30 pounds would have put me at my wedding weight. Kevin said I was too skinny then. Who knew?

I will join!      Chari, thank you for the wonderful compliment.    I am still working on it but I haven't posted much recently.

Age: 39.5

Overall weight-loss goals: 35 more pounds

Exercise plans for yourself: Water aerobics 2x wk, Zumba 2x wk, 100 abs/day (a WW challenge for Jan)

Dietary changes you see your self making: spreading my calories (points) evenly throughout the day instead of eating most of them in the evening. Fewer snacks.

Physical symptoms currently suffering, and looking for improvement: well right now strep/flu, lol. Most of my physical problems are much better and I haven't suffered from the normal winter blues.

Any other comments: I saw a Rachel Ray segment earlier this week about a woman who lost 200 lbs AND all her friends and family. No one wanted to talk to her or be around her because they felt she was "bragging" about her weight loss and they felt like she was portraying herself as better than everyone. It really got me thinking about my posting to the boards and telling the ladies at the gym about my progress.

I hope no one is/has been offended or thinks I am putting them down in anyway. I guess it is bragging but I always hoped/hope that it would be inspiring rather than degrading or making someone feel guilty or put down.

My weight loss journey has been like a pregnancy, with milestones that I want to share with friends and family. I don't mean to "brag" like I am doing something better than others or in a better way, etc. If I was pregnant I would want to give "updates" and share in the little things along the way, kwim? I guess I am wondering where to draw the line or when to bring it up at all.

Anyway, I wish success for all of us and I look forward to sharing the ups and downs on our journey.

Blessings,
Krisann

I'll join in!! Usually by this point (2 1/2 years after birth), I'm down much more than I am.

Age: 37

Overall weight-loss goals: 15 (but more general toning)

Exercise plans for yourself: 30 minutes on treadmill each day with every other day of Pilates

Dietary changes you see your self making: More vegetables, less chocolate.

Physical symptoms currently suffering, and looking for improvement: fatigue

Any other comments: I don't have a lot to lose, but these last pounds are the most difficult. Usually by now I'm pregnant and I think I've been using that as a crutch to not get started--if I'm pregnant I won't have to lose the weight. I'm not so I need to just get started.

Thank you for starting this, Chari!

I just saw this thread this morning...I'm in.

Age: 42

Overall weight-loss goals: 20 pounds to start, then I'll reassess.

Exercise plans for yourself: With all the changes we're experiencing I hope I'll be able to keep this plan...30 minutes of swimming at least three times/week until swim team season is over in March. If the swimming doesn't happen, 30 minutes on our elliptical trainer instead.

Dietary changes you see your self making: I took a break from WW.com for the holidays. I had just started it. I usually don't do diets but I'm finding I need PORTION CONTROL guidelines and a reality check about how much I'm really eating. I like food a bit (OK more than bit) more than I should. Happy Are You Poor convicted me.

Physical symptoms currently suffering, and looking for improvement: I have an inflammatory arthritis, so exercise is always good for me. Maintaining energy levels and an emotional even keel. Stress management.

Any other comments: Thank you Chari for starting this!

Just seeing this -- count me in!

Age: 43

Weight loss goal: 15 lbs (also NOT gaining more -- I was always able to eat what I wanted and not gain weight, until the past 18 months or so, when 20 pounds just came and found me. Don't want to be quite as thin as I was, but definitely want my clothes to fit! And to be healthy)

Exercise plan: daily/every other day brisk walking for 45 minutes. My husband also is committed to walking, and when I go with him, it's more like an hour.

Dietary changes: less coffee/caffeine in general. Less white/processed flour. Less sugar. More raw fruits/vegetables. I am not really a "junky" eater, but if the cookies are in front of me, I'll eat 12. Working on self-control.

Physical symptoms looking for improvement: fatigue, mainly. Muscle stiffness/aches from long hours at the computer (I'm a freelance writer, so I AM sitting here a lot). I also would very, very much like to have another baby, so am looking to improve my overall health to aid whatever chances at conceiving I might have.

Other comments: Thanks to Chari for starting this! Looking forward to checking in with everyone and cheering on everyone's success.

Sally

Hi Chari! I'm in! I actually started a holiday weightloss challenge with some friends online...only to fail miserably and gain 5lbs!!!

But since Dec 31st, I've been on the Medifast program, and I feel great and have dropped those 5 big ones plus 2 more.

Age: 33

Overall weight-loss goals: 25 lbs

Exercise plans for yourself: I'm aiming to walk on the eliptical 2x per week, but its really challenging to fit it in with the 2 year olds underfoot. 2x per week I have it "scheduled" in our school plan to swim at the fitness center with ds7 and dd5 if I can swing childcare for dd and ds 2. The indoor pool, albeit a bit chilly, is a great way for us to all get moving when the fresh powder snow turns to crusty snowcone snow and we can't go sledding.

Dietary changes you see your self making: For now, I'm sticking with Medifast because its brainless...you eat their protein "meals" and one salad a day and you lose weight. That's it. And if you can survive the first 5 days of feeling horrid, its pretty smooth sailing after that. There is essentially no prep to the meal, except the one salad. After the scale number goes down a bit, I'll be focusing on significantly decreasing sugar and refined carb. We already eat quite well...its just the sugary stuff that sneaks in!

Physical symptoms currently suffering, and looking for improvement:
More energy, less blood-sugar drops (already have disappeared since doing Medifast), improved PMS symptoms (I suspect sugar as a culprit), feeling more attractive for my hubby.

Additional Comments: I notice that many of us are in the 10-30 pound weightloss-goal range. I think I have way too often underestimated how hard these pounds are to take off. On paper, they look so few! But in reality, even if you are doing something rather extreme like Medifast, at best you are taking off a few pounds a week. I think we all need to look at this as a long haul. I know that I have not. After a week or two of diligence, and I'm only down 4 pounds, I get tired of it and start to cheat. This has been my cycle for years. Rather, I need to look at 25 pounds as realistically taking, at best, a couple months to lose..and mentally prepare myself for the discipline.

Chari, it is so like you to use your problem as a way to inspire and help others.
If I didn't have a birthday party tonight for a child I would call you but maybe this weekend?

Sally T, you sound so much like me.   Except those 10 pounds visit regularly    Mostly I just need to eat and exercise better.

This would be such a help!

Age: 34

Overall weight-loss goals: 40 lbs ~ 20 by Easter.

Exercise Plans: Walk 12 miles a week, mostly using the Leslie Sansone's Walk-Away the Pounds. (I've successfully lost weight after two other babies with this program)

Diet Changes: Eat a good breakfast, grab fruits and veggies first when craving a particular food, stop eating after my last meal, no midnight snacks.

Physical symptoms currently suffering: Back ache from all the leftover baby weight, I get depressed when I'm out of shape and tire easily

Other comments: I HATE looking frumpy, I want to be a good example to my family and I want decent pictures of me for my children to remember me by. I hate avoiding the camera on holidays because of the extra weight I don't want a record of.
