Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Another possibility if he likes horses is the Billy and Blaze series. I have not personally seen them,

Well, I have seen them!! And I heartily recommend them. My boys (3 in a row) all loved them. We pretty much wore the books out with rereading them. They have lovely simple charcoal-looking or pen and ink drawings and fed that desire in my boys for adventures on their own (this is pre Amazons and Swallows).

It also set off a rash of story telling/writing with our boys having part in the story, but with names changed. First it was Bob and Jim, "the best of brothers, the best of friends." Then when boy #3 came along he was named Rex in the story; when little sister came along, she was Beatrice and was not often allowed to come out on the cattle ride (or whatever adventure), but cooked a great meal for their return (LOL). You can be sure that she wrote herself in from time to time!!Then little brother came along and was Sam. They still sometimes tell stories with these characters.

There are a limited number in the series, though.

We love all the Jim Arnosky books especially the Crinkleroot series, but these seem hard to find. I guess they might be out of print, but they are worth collecting.

The Tim series (Tim and Ginger, Tim in Danger, etc.) is a fantastic series for boys. All the books have come back into print recently. Also, Anglund's series about the Brave Cowboy is very cute and is back in print. Karen

I'm going to second "Ox-Cart Man". It is my 2yo son (and my husband's) current favorite picture book.

I must mention the Little Tim Books by Edward Ardizzone. They are such great "boy books"!

Another good series is the Otto series by William Pene du Bois. Karen

Karen -- thanks for the suggestion about the Otto books ... those seem to be OOP but I'll try and get them from the library.

The Edward Ardizzone books never seem to attract the kids ... I'll try those again with the boys .... and Arnosky is definitely a hit around here too. A couple of years ago we did a unit just on his books and had the best (and most nature-filled) study!

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys -- I knew I could count on you!

Unit Study for Boys

This unit study has some great books for boys. It is set up as a year long "Year of the Boy" study- each month a different topic/virtue.

It is a great resource

Here is another great resource with a lot of books for boys- geared toward older ones, though: Unit Study for Young Men
