Jan Brett came to our town for a book signing event, and you had to run down to the store to get tickets early in the day for that evening. That's kind of a pain, but I thought that if it would ensure a smooth, organized event then it would be worth it. Well, it was CHAOS! Mobs of people, stuffy, hot, screaming, melting down kids - and after 1.5 hours, they were on #40 out of 275 tickets! (We were number 80 something) You had to wait until they called your number to "approach the throne", which would make sense - but it was taking SO LONG! My kids were extremely bored and so was I, for that matter. The other problem was that in the waiting area (just an area of the bookstore) there were lots of inappropriate books with disgusting pictures on the covers - swimsuit calandars for 2008, ect...I had to keep telling my kids to quit staring and giggling over what they were seeing on book covers.
I'm disappointed that we didn't get to meet her and get an autograph, but I'm glad we got out when we did - I'm just glad we didn't spend hours more there waiing. I know she's on a tour right now, and I just wanted to give y'all a heads up that it might not be worth it unless you're really in love with Jan Brett and don't mind investing HOURS of your time to get a book signed.

Oh, that's so disappointed, Marianne. 
I wonder how other authors (Tomie dePaola, Rowling) keep their author signings sane?
Has anyone else experienced this with author visits?

well....
I wouldn't say they keep it sane.
It depends on the fans and the location would be my guess.
I've always imagined it would be like you describe Marianne and never felt an inclination to go for just that reason. I really deplore waiting (esp when I pay $ for it!) and crowds and loud noises.
Same reason I've never been to a concert in my life. the whole concept just sounds completely NOT up my ally.

Oh I am sorry for you to have missed her. When we went it was crazy, but we were with Rebecca and her lovely family, so it was an enjoyable wait.

How disappointing! We avoid things like that because that is exactly how I imagine them to be.
As to the inappropriate books- flip the book around. I'm notorious for "book-flipping" (and magazine flipping in the check-out aisles) 
In fact, in the small town where we used to live the children's section of the bookstore was right beside the "erotica" section. I would walk in first, flip over Every. Single. Book. then Hubby would bring the kids in. I had already explained to the (dim-witted) owner that the placement was highly inappropriate, but she just didn't seem to get it.
At the grocery store, we do the same thing. I flip over all of the 'rags', then we proceed through. I get a lot of odd looks, but mostly smiles or outright laughter from the other customers and the cashiers.
