Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have any suggestions for good books on flying? My five year old boy has been showing a real interest in planes, blimps and the like lately (asking how they fly, etc.) and loves to make and fly paper airplanes. He's even set off rockets once with Daddy and that was a big hit.

Has anyone found any resources that my guy might like?

Thanks!!

The Hindenburg is a great picture book if you don't mind reading about people dying.

My ds 8 loved these when he was little:

Airport
DK Airplanes (this one's changed a bit)
Usborne Beginners Planes
Magic School Bus Taking Flight
Usborne Story of Flying

One thing my ds loved (almost as much as going to airports) was going to a field where men were flying radio control planes. We'd sit and watch them cleaning them, fixing them and flying them. I never would have thought of doing this if there wasn't one on a main road near our house. He always asked to stop and watch.

Flight & Aviation thread was an old thread with some suggestions.

The Glorious Flight - about crossing the Channel - is a good book and was discussed here with a few additional ideas and books.

A couple others I would add are:
Flight
My Brothers' Flying Machine: Wilbur, Orville, and Me
Wind Flyers

These are all great suggestions, thank you so much!

Your idea of going to a field to watch people fly thier planes is a great one, Cheryl! My husband and I did that once, I think when we were engaged, and we thourougly enjoyed it. I forgot all about that!

Now I need to go pay my debt to society (overdue library fines ) and take out some books.

Thank you again for your suggestions, Ladies!!

We have been talking and reading about airplanes a lot lately, as my kids will be actually flying this summer for the first time.

Here are a couple more that we've checked out at the library.

These three are about flying on an airplane and details about the airport, etc:

Up and Away: taking a flight (Davis)
Going on an Airplane )Radabaugh)
The Noisy Airplane Ride (Downs)

We also like The Glorious Flight and My Brother's Flying Machine mentioned above. And, Brave Harriet is a favorite here.

The Wright Brothers

There is also this thread that I used a couple months ago to get a few ideas.

Anne, Don't forget nearby we have the two Air and Space Museums. We took our son to the Dulles one a few months ago and that really ignited interest. Plus they have some great books in the bookstore to get ideas.

Another thing if you can go to the Outer Banks and view the Wright Memorial it is soo great. There were many books on flying for children that we really enjoy.

Its funny you mention those, Jenn! We've been to the museum twice, and the second time we were there, we saw the fighter jet movie, which the kids loved (I include my former navigator dad in the "kids" statement! ), and we'll be heading to the OBX in August (after the baby ). We will definately have to take the boys to see the memorial -- thank you for the suggestion!!

Just ran across this book - Fantastic Flights. It is very well done. Each two page spread covers a particular aircraft or flight event. One page is a full size picture. The other page has factual data and a column with sideview and overhead view drawn, dimensions, etc.

This would be a big hit with young airplane and flying fans.
