Great Series for summer read alouds:
Finn Family Moomintroll and all the Moomintroll books.
Half Magic and others by Eager.
Anything by E.Nesbit, but especially The Wouldbegoods, which are summer adventures the likes of which every child should have.
Same goes for Swallows and Amazons.

Oh, yeah, summer plans:
Our garden is already going strong. Libby has only one more concert, German School ends in mid-June, the beach opens in two weeks , and then we ship Libby up to music school in MA for the summer , but we get to visit her often, and we will camp nearby.
Between the garden, the beach, and the mountainous vistas of the Pioneer Valley, we will be quite busy. But at least I don't have to put Libby on the train at 6:40 anymore.

Here in Mississippi it is too hot and humid to do much outside in the summer (for this Yank, at least!)
We started 4pm teatime last week and it is going well! We went to the thrift store to find some china cups and found a couple teapots as well. So far, I'm the only one that drinks the tea, but my girls find it terribly exciting to drink milk out of a fragile cup. I've been doing a read aloud at this time, too, we are currently reading _Baby Island_. I took some pictures, I'll see if I can get them posted. On our next thrift store adventure we are going to look for "fancy" plates and a lacy tablecloth.
Monday I started a daily "Craft" time. I realized it didn't need to be a huge, planned, messy craft-today we are stamping and listening to Jim Weiss' "Tell Me A Story". I'm alternating between stamping and posting this message!
I'm hoping to get our afternoons on a routine-the pool opens next week so we will probably have lunch, swim, craft or handiwork (my 5 yo wants to learn to knit!), quiet room time and then tea time. Hopefully this will keep us occupied and productive during the worst heat of the day.
On Thursday mornings we are getting together with two other hs families for arts&crafts-8 kids under 6 years! The moms are alternating planning/hosting the project. This will give us a chance to do all those BIG craft projects that I never have the time or energy for.
My 2 olders will be doing gymnastics this summer as well. 90 minutes twice a week. My plan is to really focus on my 2.5 yo dd, I realized last night she know hardly any nursery rhymes. BAD MOM!! So while sisters are at gymnastics we will read and color and sing songs.
In August we are headed up to the UP of Michigan for two weeks. That's about it for our traveling this year.

All I can imagine is you sitting under your magnolia trees on a white tablecloth on the luscious green fertile grasswith your dc, sipping tea and mint juleps!!!
I miss the South! I was from Houston and Shreveport. Northern Virginia doesn't give me that true Southern charm, but I do get the heat!!!

For summer reading, I have to recommend Elizabeth Enright's books, Gone-Away Lake and Return to Gone-Away.
Portia and her cousin discover adventure in a hidden colony of forgotten summer houses on the shores of a swampy lake. One of my favorites that I reread a dozen times. We enjoyed them on audio (return audio), also. it's one we repeat.

Mint juleps under the magnolia sounds great-problem is, Daddy would come home at 6:00 and mom, having had one mint julep too many, would be snoring on the fertile lawn while the dc...?? I can't even imagine what they would be up to!

I would have the same problem! But it got me to thinking, what about a non-alcoholic version or just using those beautiful silver cups, all chilled filled with crushed ice? That would be fun for everyone! I had made a purchase of 8 of those cups a while back, and been waiting to use them. But they are going to waste, waiting for the special occasion. Anything would work, and with a sprig of mint and/or a little green dye no one would know!!!! I think I could apply the same idea, to use the china and good silver and not save it for "special occasion."
I've just seen some luscious pictures in Southern Living and Martha Stewart Living in the past that just look so lovely and cool, romantic, charming, that I want to do it. I'm just crazy on a tangent...

I talked about it with my girls and we are going to do it! Two outside tea parties-one to celebrate the beginning of the summer and one to celebrate the end. I'm picturing little girls all in their frilly finest, boys in short pants and bow ties, white gloves, maybe some ballroom dancing??

I am laughing out loud envisioning this, Jennifer.
I am hoping for a MacBeth Marguerita sometime this Summer. Maybe if I offer to help in her garden, I'll get one!

You bet! I make them traditional, not frozen, so we need no blender.

Yes, I was pregnant the last time a pitcher of Margeritas came my way. This may be my year as well.

Yeah, and stupid MacBeth brought enough for Alice, forgetting that she was expecting.
Hasn't this conversation gone off topic yet,

Fill shaker with broken cubed ice.
Squeeze TWO fresh lime wedges into shaker.
Add 2 oz. Cuervo 1800.
Add 1-1/4 oz. of Roses Lime Juice
Add 1/2 oz. Triple Sec
Add "a splash" of Orange Curaco
Cover shaker tightly!
Shake vigorously.
Rim glass with Lime peel (outside only!).
Salt the outside only.
Add fresh ice.
Strain mixture over ice.
I wonder if Viv has a variation to share?

Ok-here's a way to tie all this together:
Drink three Macbeth Margerita's -then-
Try to read above list of book titles out loud.
