Any suggestions out there for doing a study of/lapbook on/notebook on...LEGOS? This is at the request of my 15 yo ds. The obvious rabbit trails that spring to mind have to do with developing a business, Denmark, trends in toys (from open-ended toys like the first Legos, to movie and theme-oriented toys, like the current Legos. Hmm sounds like a college research paper there...) But I need more concrete ideas, I think.

Well, Kelly, there's always the history of Lego (how could he find that??), how Lego has been marketed in the past, and how its marketing has changed, or how Legos are manufactured (in great detail). My 7 y.o. has said for three years that his career goal is to become a Lego Master Builder. He doesn't understand that the pay isn't too high for that position!

Au contraire (sp?), but I do think the pay is pretty good...they are engineers and quite amazing people that come up with these ideas! My 11 year old nephew has some of the same ideas...to be a designer for new Legos.
There's a DK book he checked out from his library that has great details and illustrations on the history of Lego. As usual, it's a great book put out by DK. Ultimate Lego Book. This will answer all your above questions and then some!

I haven't any personal knowledge of the subject, but I managed to find the website of a man who claims he can teach anything using Legos. From the browsing I've done of his site so far, I believe him! There are also some lessons by the same author available on a site called E-ventures. Then there's Lessons with Lego: Engaging Students in Chemical Engineering Courses. I haven't read the document, but it certainly sounds like advanced education to me!
Amazon has an incredible number of books on advanced lego building, including this one. "Legos" is a subject you could spend years studying--but what fun!

Thank you, all, for the ideas...keep 'em coming! In the meantime, I have to say that the Eventures website, from the man that claims he can teach anything with legos, has my children in an absolute uproar---they can't WAIT to try some of the challenges. And yes, even the somewhat cool 15 year old, is impressed and ready to get started. As far as I can tell, it is extremely creative and impressive website. Have any "brickheads" out there on our thread used it before?

Yes, my girls were intrigued by the E-ventures site as well, although I must admit, before you brought this up, the thought of Legos hadn't really crossed my mind. Now I'm seeing possibilities for all kinds of incredible learning experiences. I found an excellent source for Lego notebook paper (free online, with instructions for use) along with a sample page from a Lego lab notebook. To make your Lego lapbooks even more special, check out this fun Lego scrapbook paper.
Lego's educational page is another great resource. My children are really going to love this--now if only we owned a set of Legos!

And have any of you ever tried a Lego Brickmaster Membership? It is $39.99, but for a large family, it's almost a bargain.

i let my kids take digital pictures of their lego creations (for easy editing) -- these can go into a lapbook and/or a blog. my 6-yo currently has a book he's working on using Knights' Kingdom guys. it started out as the original story (from the Lego website), then he added to it. definitely great writing practice. he's planning to put some of it in his blog too. they've even shot their creations "on location", e.g., on snow (my favorite), on grass, hanging from a shelf, etc.
it would be interesting to see, years from now, how many of our kids end up as Lego designers/builders/creators. my two boys are also planning their Lego career paths LOL.

I looked at the sites Alice referenced and they look great and Bridget's church was awesome! Here's my question: my boys tell me we don't have nearly the collection it would take to execute the lesson plans. where do you buy sets like that, as opposed to the themed sets in Target? I know Lakeshore has sets but does anyone have a lead on something priced well?

i haven't bought lego at ebay yet, elizabeth, but i keep finding good stuff there. my boys are saving up to buy some "lego people". i would have loved to have some of the middle ages lego people when we were studying the middle ages but i didn't have the budget then -- it was $35 for 50 people or something like that, and they had kings, crusader-type Lego people, etc. complete with swords, shields, etc. maybe next time.

Go to Lego's website, Elizabeth. They sell non-themed sets and even have specific bricks and other parts.

Toys R Us (and other toy stores, I'm sure) carries large buckets of 1200 generic bricks. You could also buy from a catalog like this one.
Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on who you ask), we do not suffer from lego shortage over here. The room the older two boys share is a sea of legos. I'm sure that our family has single handedly funded someone's retirement over at Lego.com.

Just to show how much you moms influence me, I thought I would tell you that my daughters are now happily absorbed in the Deep Sea Predators Legos set, purchased today at a local toy store. My girls were floored when I came home with a new toy out of the blue. They are loving this phase I'm suddenly in, so I thank you all on their behalf. : )

Has anyone had any experience with the Lego Software Power Tools?
I would really like to order this for my ds for school but I am so afraid our system won't support it. We already tried to download Digital Designer from the Lego site and our graphic card was the wrong one. We tried to load the program to a cd but apparantly you can only put it on your hard drive. My ds is trying to be patient but he is soooooo anxious to use this software. Any comments?
