Since Pope Benedict XVI has declared June 2008-June 2009 the year of St. Paul in celebration of the 2,000th anniversary of the saint's birth, I though it would be helpful to have a place to compile resources and ideas for celebrating this year in our domestic churches.
You could start compiling a Pauline Year notebook - using this official symbol as a cover picture.
Memorials over next 12 months
29 June (celebration of Saints Peter and Paul co-founders of the Church)
18 November (feast of the dedication of the Basilicas of Peter and Paul)
25 January (celebration of his conversion)
For the year 2009, the Vatican has authorized the celebration of the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul on the usual day, January 25, although the date falls on the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time and the Sunday celebration would ordinarily pre-empt the observance of the feast day.

Benedict XVI is offering those who visit the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls the opportunity to receive a plenary indulgence during the Pauline Jubilee Year.
Those who are not in Rome can obtain the indulgence “if they participate devotedly in a religious function or in a pious exercise held publicly in honor of the Apostle of the Gentiles: on the days of the solemn opening and closing of the Pauline Year in any place of worship; on other days determined by the local ordinary, in holy places named for St. Paul and, for the good of the faithful, in other places designated by the ordinary.”
Conditions of indulgence: “In order that the prayers pronounced on these holy visits may lead and draw the souls of the faithful to a more intense veneration of the memory of St. Paul, the following conditions are laid down: The faithful, apart from pronouncing their own prayers before the altar of the Blessed Sacrament, […] must go to the altar of the Confession and pray the ‘Our Father’ and the ‘Creed,’ adding pious invocations in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Paul; and such acts of devotion must remain closely linked to the memory of the prince of the apostles, St. Peter.”
Find out if there are holy places named for St. Paul in your diocese that have been designated for you to visit.

I was just coming here to see what great ideas everyone had for this year of St. Paul!
Thank you so much for posting this! Just want to mention that we have the board game The Journeys of Paul and it is excellent. It would be great fun for using as part of any study about him.

I had to e-mail our Diocese this am. There is no information posted anywhere on the Year of St. Paul - we have one Basilica in our state and it is. . .you guessed it!. . .the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul. There is nothing on their website about the YofP or the indulgence, either. So I also e-mailed them.
I'm just not clear from the wording - if we go to confession on Sat. the 28th and attend Mass on the 29th with the intention of receiving the indulgence, does that "count" (forgive that crude wording!) as participating in a religious function on the day of the opening of the YofP? Even if our parish never mentions that they are supposed to be celebrating the Year of St. Paul???
My kids are really excited and want to do this!

Good questions, Jenny. This can be confusing. For so long in our lifetimes we didn't hear much about indulgences.
Cardinal Stafford has stated that conditions for the special Pauline year indulgence include the normal requirements set by the Church for all plenary indulgences: that the person goes to confession, receives the Eucharist and prays for the intentions of the Pope, and be free from all attachment to sin.
For those of us who cannot make the pilgrimage to St. Paul Outside-the-Walls
•The Catholic faithful in any local church can obtain the indulgence by participating with devotion in a liturgy or other public event dedicated to St. Paul—in any sacred place on the opening and closing days of the jubilee year, and on other days in places designated by the local bishop.
Attending a Mass on the opening or closing day would be sufficient if there is no specific events planned. Also the confession just needs to take place within 20 days (before or after).
From the Vatican website - The Gift of the Indulgence: It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope's intentions is left to the choice of the faithful, but an "Our Father" and a "Hail Mary" are suggested.
Our diocese does not have anything specific yet publiced about events locally. I think we will be seeing something soon. We only have one small St. Paul parish in a rural area and then a Sts. Peter and Paul here in the city.

I felt that I should come back now that I've got another minute and say that neither of those websites are the greatest overall. The Sandwich post is terrific though for details on how to make the actual sandwich. The Pudding post is simply boring.  I think we should start blogging specific recipes so fabulous posts pop up in google when people search for something like Saint Peter's Pudding.
Also, Mary, if these two posts need to be moved to another thread, feel free! For some reason I always hesitate to start a new thread till it is too late...

I love it, Colleen! I was just brainstorming on following a theme of St. Paul for our upcoming year. I'm leaning more on using some quotes from St. Paul and dissecting them a bit to apply to our virtue and habit training. Ds asked a few days ago "What does Love mean?" and I replied that it's hard to define, but you know but what love is, and proceeded to bring out the book Love Is.... But now you are making me rethink it a bit. We've been reading and discussing his life the last week. He and Peter sure lived exciting lives, and it's so neat that it's preserved in our Bible!

Late with my kudos - but wanted to say, thank you so much, Colleen. This is an incredible resource!!! Appreciate you putting it together. We have been very busy and focused on guests and vacations the past few weeks, but I hope to get on track with it soon.

I think right now that we are going to use that 52 week bible study and make a big wall timeline, having the kids take turns doing narrations for each reading maybe and illustrating each one.
Also planning on getting that board game! :)
