After Jen recommended this book tape for spines from Vernon, I have gone through 2 rolls, about to place another order. It's been so wonderful!

Now my next two repair issues. Torn pages and cover detaching and book detaching from cover.

I was overwhelmed at the choices. Torn page repair right now is tape, and that gets bulky and messy. Has anyone tried other methods?

What's your favorite?

And how about those spines? Any help there?

I love that tape, too, Jenn! It has been such a worthy investment here!!

** I use clear, thin, acid-free transparent tape for repairing torn pages. There are a couple of options that are acid free - Lineco Document Repair tape and Duck brand makes a very inexpensive all purpose matte finish tape that is acid free.

** I had to repair a very old book with a disintegrating binding and used my book tape. I checked into have the book re-bound and that was well outside of our budget. The book tape did a great job, and the books are completely use-able now. I used this tutorial. Here are the books after my repair:

You can see the top and bottom of the spine is almost completely missing and book tape serves as the spine now! It works great!!

I like the wikihow tutorials, Jenn, and found this one that might help you re-attach your book guts to the cover. If I were attaching guts to cover, I'd probably work with something more heavy duty like this heavy duty cloth repair tape

Thanks, Jen. Most of the spines are loose, showing the webbing, but not completely detached. I've had a couple of mishaps that the book fell and landed right on a spot to tear the book from the spine.

Nothing brilliant to offer for torn pages, I've just used sticky tape. Book tape is better as it won't yellow.

Cover detaching- If an easy paperback such as Penguin, I've just run a bead of glue along the inside of the spine and held the book into place. I rang a book repairer and that is not that different from what he did.

Now hard covers, I don't have access to proper tape, I know with a precious prayer book we had I used medicine tape, several stripes, catching in the spine and covers, on the outside. Not the prettiest but at least we can use the book.

Bumping this thread. I just had to share my two latest book repair tools. I have been using The Book Guard Tape on a regular basis -- it has been wonderful to repair and protect my books.

When I reordered more tape, I also bought Paper Mending Tape which has been wonderful to repair torn pages without adding bulk to the book.

But my favorite by far is Vernbond Plastic Adhesive. It's a plastic glue -- looks like craft glue, but it's much stronger. I've been repairing some cracked spines, loose bindings, etc. and it's been a miracle! It works better than Tacky Glue or other similar types (I know, because I've tried them).

Anyway, just had to share!

Thanks for sharing Jenn. I think I need to order some supplies and have a book fixing day this fall. Anyone want to join me?

I have a few questions...as to repair tape...what width would I commonly need and how long? I assume I will be doing this often enough but how much is too much?

As for the heavy duty tape, what color would be best as I will probably only buy one...and again..how wide??

How much plastic glue would be sufficient for about a year or two's supply??

Thank you for your help!

Donna,

I'd only get a bit of some materials to see if you like them.

I picked the clear tape, and the widest, and use it for everything -- paperbacks and hardcovers. Sometimes I use the tape to cover the whole outside of the book, which means several strips. I try to protect all the spines of paper and hard. Right now I'm looking at some TinTin and Asterix that I reinforced.

I tried out some corner edges and spine reinforcers, also clear. They are very convenient, but pricey. I am wondering if it's cheaper to just use the tape.

I bought 2 bottles of glue, have been using it liberally and not even 1/4 down on the bottle, so don't go overboard.

Ideally I wish I had something for my dustjackets, but I am not willing to shell out $$$ for various sizes. I wish there was a one size fits all, like Erin had described in her tutorial. Meanwhile, if a dustjacket is ripping or falling apart, I repair it with tape (packing, Scotch, or the paper tape I mentioned above) and sometimes just cover with clear contact paper.

My tools of the trade also include cleaners. Goo-Gone for those stubborn stickers and residue. I use Clorox Wipes to clean down books, or Formula 409 with paper towels or Folex.

About Folex, I don't know if you saw Jen's Post, but I totally concur, and have used it on EVERYTHING. Stains come off walls, clothes, counters, books. I use Folex on a few of the covers to remove and clean stains. Hardcover books are cloth, and some of the older ones I have were badly stained. You wouldn't believe the change. You have to be careful, because some books the color runs, so test before you do anything. But I have also used it on some durable paperbacks.

So those are my book secrets. From time to time I will tackles a shelf or a series of books, but generally, if we touch it, if it's out, if I'm adding it to our shelves, that's when I do maintenance work.

I would have to get a range of sizes, so that's my hesitation to pull the trigger.

Jenn,
I have been using Bodart book jacket covers for over five years and I have been very please with them.

I get the this combination:
Length: 300' L
Height: 14" H
Mil: 2
Film Finish: Super Clear
PK type: Rolls
Qty/Pk: 1

It comes on a role. There are plastic forms that go in each end of the role and fit in the box it comes in, so you can role it off the role without having to take it out of the box. One of the ends of the mylar has a permanent crease. I simply take off my dust jacket off and measure out the width that I need and cut it off the role. I then place the bottom of the dust jacket snugly in the permanent crease and fold the mylar over the top edge of the cover and crease it with the edge of my scissors or something like that. It very customizable. I have had some of these covers on for five years and they still look great. I can't recommend this enough for saving dust jackets for picture books!

Note on the size I got. I choose 14" because I cover a lot of picture books. This size seems to fit almost all my needs. Someone else might consider getting the 12" or less if they were doing only chapter books.

You're welcome Jenn! I understand thousands of dust jackets. I won't tell you how many rolls I have been through in five years....

My dad owns (and my brother runs) a tape and label converting company in Kansas. Most of their sales are wholesale (to school supply, library supply, and hospital supply companies—color-coding labels, book repair tape, security tape, etc.). But they have a small online retail branch of book repair and color-coding tapes marketed toward people like you and me. These are the products I use for my own book repair needs.

So... I will pass along their website so you can see the products, only IF a moderator tells me it's okay to do so. I'm not sure what the 4Real policy is in promoting a family business. :)

Thank you so much for your consideration, Elizabeth. The policy at 4Real is such that as long as the promotion falls within the context of a current thread, it's fine to link. Linking to your family business would certainly fit within the context of this thread and I'd love to know the business. Please link!

Thanks, Jen!

The retail business is Stick-E-Mart.

(The wider business, if you want to see all their products—some of which you might be able to buy as a retailer through a phone call to Stick-E-Mart—is Roll Products Inc.)

I use their book repair tape and their cloth tape regularly. They used to also have corner guards for books with corners that needed reinforcing, but I don't see those on the site. I'll ask my brother about them. Usually I just call up and ask for what I need, so I haven't looked at the site in a while.

This is a Catholic business that gives its employees the day off on Holy Days.

If you have any special requests for products they should consider in the future, call and ask for my brother, Andrew Latham.

Hope this helps!
