As a result of this thread, I think it would be fun to share what books we enjoy and print for free on Google Books. Most of what I find ends up being a result of looking for an OOP title. A few I've found:
Catholic Churchmen of Science 2nd in series
Popes and Science also by Walsh
Modern Speller by Kate Van Wagenenand Dictation Day by Day which Eva introduced in this thread.
My Life As A Naturalist (I'm looking forward to reading this one, I already printed it)
Did you catch Kris's post mentioning a few gems.
And of course the one I'm absolutely enjoying is Charlotte Mason's Volume 1.
I should mention this site not all their books are free, but it's fun too look at some old books.

I have printed out quite a few books over the years. I can't really post them all right now because my parents from Germany are visiting. I thought I would give you a few, though:
Nature Study in Elementary Schools: A Manual for Teachers

There is also a reader for grade 1.

Do I print ebooks?
Ummmm....yes. Please see unabashed gushing and love-fest with spiral binding tool for evidence of this. 
I actually prefer using archive.org for reading online and for printing an ebook. I just find their format works better for me for printing and reading.

I just can't get the dictation book to come up in Google (the book from the linked post!). It appears but gives me no option to read it in pdf!!

You need to click on "preview." Then you get the book. On the top of the page towards the right is a little line that says "PDF." I hope this helps.

I'm so glad that somebody else has discovered the treasures at google books  ! Alexandra at Happy Hearts Homeschooling posts new books several times per week. Most are from google books. She always has interesting finds.

I've got loads of books marked and .pdf files on my computer, but I am slow to pull the trigger at printing.
How do you print? One-sided? Do you send the file to a printing place like Staples?
I want to be like Jenny and have both those binding options...but I'm thinking if I'm using paper and toner and sitting in front of my printer that it's not worth all the trouble!
Convince me....I can't stand reading digitally. I just can't wrap my brain around it as well as the printed word, so I know printing them would be better.
Some books are impossible to find, but some OOP books you can find older beat-up copies. Do you find printing and binding is worth the time and money and better than buying an older book?

These are my questions exactly, Jenn! I really don't like reading digitally--I find that I don't use all those gems I have stored on my computer at all. So I know I need to have a paper copy available, but I'm not sure where to start and how to make it as book-like as possible.

Some of my bookmarked books:
Catholic Girls' Guide by Father Lasance
I found a copy of Text Books of Art Education, Book 1 by Hugo B. Froehlich. It's a whole series Text Books on Archive.org
The images are clearer and higher quality here, but not all are downloadable unless you have associations with the university libraries.
So, looking around for those authors, I found Industrial Art Text Books, part 3 by Bonnie E. Snow, Hugo B. Froehlich, George William Koch (which is a whole series, have to look for more grades). I was thrown off by "Industrial" but really these are handiwork ideas -- and just fabulous books.
I think this was pointed out by Kris, Sister Mary Domitilla, The Ideal Catholic Readers and Standard Catholic Readers by Mary E. Doyle. And I know she mentioned some Catholic history books that are there, also.
I have loads bookmarked....but I see a lot of duplicates i need to clean out!

I tend to try to stock up on things when I find good deals, toner is one of them. I have a simple ink jet hp 2410 photosmart all in one printer, since I think this is considered old as far appliances, I've found good deals on toner, especially on ebay. It has served me well.
*I'll print two pages per one landscaped page, this cuts the pages in half, I'm not sophisticated enough to double side print (neither is my printer, this is tideous).
*I can just leave it alone to print, I walk away and come back when its done.
*I then cut some pretty scrap booking paper like the one I showed on my blog and print the title on it.
*Then I would take to staples and have them bind with the plasctic clear cover and dark backing.
*Now, I've been using medium weight chipboard paper for the backing and still my pretty paper for the cover. I haven't used the chipboard paper on the proclick yet, but my bind it all is meant for those heavy materials. Plus, for my books I really like that wire binding look.
The only thing that I don't like so far is maybe the quality of some art/picture prints.
I can write on the paper because when put two pages on one I end up with a nice margin on the sides. Because its spiral bound it opens really nice. And lastly, I do have lots of old books too(and prefer them if the bindings are good/solid) but sometimes its hard with old hinges. If I can't find it for a reasonable price, this is the second best thing and there is so much OOP .

Had to come back and mention: I just printed the Anna McGovern book we were talking about and it is very thick. So what I've done with other very thick books is basically divide them and call it book/volume/part (take a pick) 1 and 2.
It works well with this book because in our region of CA we pretty much have cold and warm weather. So division at Chap. IV Spring was quiet appropriate (I just reprinted the Table of Contents, Index, Title page for the last two chapters and this will be Part 2).

If it is a book we're going to USE OR READ FOR LESSONS, I always prefer a paper copy (I edited this...because initially I said that I always print, but that isn't the case...sometimes I find the book used and very cheap...but I do always prefer paper if a book is for lesson reading). Here is the process I go through in case it's a help for you, Jenn:
** Find a book title that seems very intriguing...
** Who recommended it? Sometimes I'll take a chance based on who recommends a title. How many people recommend it?
** Research online - can I find a digital copy to preview? Download to Kindle for preview copy (or skim on the computer if not using an ereader...my pref for reading books online is ARCHIVE.ORG). {{{Insert library option here if you have it!}}}
** Does it look like a SURE THING??
{EXAMPLE: Handicrafts for Girls - I knew after previewing this book after a few minutes that if I could find a hard copy, I'd be willing to go over my pre-set cheap limit. I knew that I'd be willing to stretch to seek out the real book on this one.}
** Does the book look intriguing/promising, but probably not something I'd hand down. However, it still looks like it might be a useful supplement? Begin to consider printing it myself, but first...research more....
** Is it available inexpensively through online used sellers? (My definition of inexpensive is anything less than $5) If yes, preview again, and make decision about an inexpensive purchase.
{Part of my decision making process is that I need to have a place that this book fits - either in free reading, following a child's passions/interests, or a place the book fits in the lesson booklist, otherwise, I probably don't purchase.}
** Is it difficult to locate a used copy of the book online, or impossible? PRINT.
Here's how I print:
** I'm particular about paper choice - I like inexpensive, but I don't like cheap and I don't think an inkjet prints well on a paper that is too flat, so I like a high brightness value. I use the Xerox paper that Costco sells because it offers a nice brightness, isn't too thick, and prints two-sided nicely. And it's a good price.
** I use Adobe for printing pdfs because I prefer the print settings.
** I print two-sided, but right now I have to do it manually. SUCH.A.DRAG. And my printer is constantly getting hung (just because it's hiccuping because it's several years old)...so, I've been setting a little aside for several months and have saved enough for a nice new printer that prints two-sided AUTOMATICALLY! What a joy! I'm just finishing up the last of my printer cartridges and then I'll order my new printer. I've narrowed it down to two, and am so excited to finally do this!!! But, for now....
** I tell Adobe to print even pages only. Reload paper.
** Then, I tell it to reverse pages, and print odd pages. (I don't hover over the printer during this time, but I do check every now and then.)
** I print the cover page last because I print that on cardstock.
** Then, I bind immediately...OR...I have an accordion file folder I keep in my desk basket and I put a big clip on the book and stash it in my book printing file so I can bind several books at once.

I much prefer to hand my kids a paper book to read, and will probably always prefer paper for reading, however, the ereader has come in very handy for me in previewing books. My kids use the ereader frequently for an altogether different reason.

Oh dear. I feel like this is going to be terribly UN-inspiring and a huge let down. I didn't mean to make it seem so **INTRIGUING**!
We live in an area that doesn't have the greatest library system. Juvenile non-fiction is ok, but juvenile fiction isn't, and most of the books there worth reading my kids have read, or own. And my readers are VORACIOUS readers! Additionally, our library stocks nothing Catholic, nothing Charlotte Mason, nothing phil of ed that I'm interested in. Our ILL costs $ for each book requested.  So...sad little library.
Add to that the fact that we *very joyfully* live quite rurally - so trips into town are minimal for us.
When I started really paying attention to the number and type/quality of books that are available in the public domain that the kids could read...for free...without having to go ANYWHERE to get them, I started considering a kindle. Then I saw the value in it for me, and that the children's free reading options would open up considerably by simply reading some of the fantastic oop books available at gutenberg, archive.org, etc. I began to see the distinct possibilities I had to open up their reading options. THEN...I learned about library lending for Kindles and I was SOLD!
I also like that I can convert documents to pdfs and load them onto my high school dd's Kindle for her to read. I do this with a number of things I find online, or write for her, or perhaps assignments or notes.
So, I use the kindle for a few oop books that are prohibitively difficult or expensive to acquire, and to preview books....my kids make use of the kindle for FREE READING. That's the *altogether different reason* for the (older) children having a Kindle.
Hope that wasn't too big a letdown!

Nope. Perfect. We also live in an area with a sad little library (it tries hard, but just cannot keep up with my kids!).
I originally bought my Kindle just for me, but it didn't take long for me to realize the benefit to my kids as well, with all of those wonderful oop books available free. So I have been slowly gathering books on there for them, too.

Jenny, I have been downloading and formatting the James Walsh books about Catholics in medicine and science--what a great find! While researching the people he mentioned, I discovered that Walsh wrote the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia entries for some of these people, like the one about Giovanni Battista Morgagni
I plan on dropping names of Catholic scientists that relate to the anatomy and physiology classes I teach for Homeschool Connections. These books have given me a wealth of leads!
