I am looking for a book or books for my dd14 that might strengthen her knowledge and give her tools in defending the Faith of the Catholic Church. She is unfortunately confronted with very stupid statements about the Church, especially from adults.
I am thankful for any suggestions.

Amy Welborn's Prove It! series is aimed at teens. Each book covers a different topic (Church, God, etc.).

I am sorry your dd is stuck dealing with this situation, but it sounds as though you are supporting her in all the right ways.

Hi Stephanie, I just purchased two of the Beginning Apologetics series for my teen. I chose these because they seemed to be written in a very clear, question and answer format. Ds said he is looking forward to reading them. I didn't see anything specific to the role of women in the church in the ones I purchased, but it does have a section on the Blessed Mother.

I'm sorry your daughter is facing this, too, but with your help, I'll pray it can be an opportunity to grow in faith!

If you like audio, I HIGHLY recommend the resources from http://www.biblechristiansociety.com/home.php. I've enjoyed and learned a lot from every one I've listened to. I've even passed them out to others.

Great resources!!!

Christine, the apologetics site you linked to seems to be aimed toward defending the Faith with other denominations.
The problem here is with cradle Catholics! How does a teen defend her Faith to/with/against (?) other Catholics!
Some things she has to listen to are just so unbelievably stupid!

Stephanie, "Prove It - God" doesn't (my ds just finished reading it.) the most likely of the series to address this issue would be "Prove It - Church" but I don't know if it does so directly.

This article Why Women Can't Be Priests may help.

It's not a source but something else you may want to consider is how to gracefully step out of a conversation. Just because someone throws out incorrect information, we don't have to step forward and argue it. Especially not if it's the same people again and again. Some people simply won't listen no matter what your argument is. So being able to walk away or change the subject would be helpful. This of course is easier if you don't feel unsettled by what they say.. but still.. taking that question thrown at you to a better source to ask about it would probalby be more helpful anyway.

Jodie is right. It is an important skill to learn how to "not bite" or to feel constantly on the defense. Off the top of my head, here are a few skills that teens can use...

Answer questions with another question. Ex: "What makes you believe..." or "Where did you get that information?" or "Why do you ask?" or "Haven't we talked about this before?" or "Does this make you happy?"

Humbly offer to find an authoritative resource. Ex: "I'm not an expert but I would be glad to find a good resource for you. Would you like to read more about...?" or "Thanks for asking me but you will find a better answer if you talk to a priest (or search online at - give them a webpage, etc.)"

Agree to disagree. Ex: "I can see that we don't agree on this point. It's OK to agree to disagree."

Turn attention to what you share in common. "I really enjoy these discussions" or "We agree on so many things" or "How about those Red Sox? or "Nice weather we're having."

Smile and nod. My dd is especially effective with this. She can really wait without responding, giving the other person time to sit with what they have said.

Honesty. "I'm busy (tired, hungry, not in the mood) right now and don't want to talk about this. How about another time?"

The "Prove It" series, although not addressing the content of females and priesthood, do give many examples of dialogue and how to communicate when necessary.

I believe she was referring to the Beginning Apologetics set that has 9 books.

another vote for Beginning Apologetics. used these with both 19-yo and 14-yo. We all learned a lot from them. I'm planning to get Prove It! God for my 7th grader, but as I haven't seen it yet I don't have an opinion.

I agree with Jodie and Angie, too, though- sometimes it is better not to engage in discussion. Your daughter may be struggling with how to respectfully discuss these things with adults. If you are available, could she defer to you? Does she have to interact with these people on a regular basis, or could she avoid being placed in this situation?

She could read the section in the Catechism that refers to Holy Orders, and "Who Can Receive This Sacrament?" It is very clear. This would help her understanding.

eta: Pope John Paul II wrote quite a bit on the dignity of women, but I think much of it would be difficult reading for a 14-year old.

How difficult. I will pray for all involved.
