I just got back from our appt with the pediatric gastro guy. He want to do more testing and he wants me to eliminate dairy, wheat, peanuts, and a bunch of other stuff from my 18 month olds diet. He said if I wanted to continue nursing I'd have to go on the same diet as well as taking a lot of extra calcium and vitamin D supplements.
I'm honestly not sure which would be easier-weaning an avid nurser who already has so many issues or tailoring my own diet with these restrictions. I've already been on the feingold diet with him for a month and have given up coffee, tea, and soda.:( Obviously, I'll do whatever is best for him, but I'm having a hard time processing that nursing him isn't helping him? And he is my baby- I don't want to stop nursing quite yet although I realize that the days are numbered now anyway- my older boys all self weaned around this age.
So, besides looking for a shoulder to cry on, I'm looking for any been there done that stories!

I think it's easier to avoid those things yourself. I force weaned a baby that age in order to start chemo. And...that is pretty much the diet I follow now. So, it can be done and it's not so bad after you adjust. It would be hard to take breast milk away from your little guy.

Elizabeth,
I know you'll be off the internet for Lent, but I wonder if you could point me in the direction of some cookbooks that follow these restrictions. I spoke with my DH after I posted and he thinks that we'll all follow the restrictions as a part of family solidarity- so I guess I don't have to worry about weaning- just cooking in a new way.
Thanks,
Jen

Jen,
I'm not much in to substitutes, so I tend to just avoid the foods. I eat rice or quinoa instead of pasta. I eat sandwich stuffings wrapped in lettuce instead of bread. I don't drink milk and I don't do cheese. I can tolerate yogurt, so I will use that occasionally. I'm going to try to post my Lenten menus on my kitchen blog in the next couple of days. If I get to it, I'll link from my main blog so that you'll know it's there. Jenn Miller ate this diet while breastfeeding too and I think her kitchen blog is more complete than mine so you might PM her for direction.

Oh Jen, this is so hard! I had to do this when ds turned 1. I weaned at 18 months because I was pregnant because I needed more protein sources. I avoided eggs, wheat, dairy, peanuts and treenuts, and at first mustard, cinnamon and garlic/onion. It was very hard.
There are several threads and I have loads of advice but just a little time. You don't need to wean yet...and there's a lot of options to eat. Can you pm me your email address and we'll talk?

Jen,
I gave up all milk proteins while nursing my little guy at about a year--and it was hard but so worth it. You CAN do it. The transition to a new way of eating and reading labels was so time consuming-especially in the beginning. Finding someone who can give you tricks will be so helpful. My cousin told me Junior Mints were "legal" and that helped me get my chocolate fix. McDonalds plain burgers and fries were OK too--though we don't like to eat there it helped when we traveled. Stuff like that just made it bearable. You unfortunately have a lot more going on than just milk protein.
You may find with all these issues and him being an avid nurser it is his comfort and he may be your longest nurser. :)
The Dairy Free Cookbook by Jane Zukin was my bible through my few years of this "adventure." Maybe it will help you. I got it out of the library and then purchased it. I noticed she has a few other books out now. I did find a tofu recipe for filling for lasagna or stuffed shells in a Vegetarian magazine that passed dh's taste test(that was hard). I had to make my own bread so bought a breadmaker and still use it, though I really don't need too. Once you get some basics going it just becomes a way of life.
I found that this diet was so difficult compared to dd's allergies to peanuts and eggs. I'd take them over the dairy diet again any day. They are not in EVERYTHING like milk proteins.
Here's hoping you find a mentor. I am off for Lent also but will keep you in my prayers.
Anne

I had another thought. Was your child tested for these, or this is just a shot in the dark to try and see if your child is having reactions to these foods? My son had reflux problems and we first did dairy elimination which helped a little, but it wasn't until we went to an allergist that I figured out it was more than just dairy.
If you didn't see an allergist, elimination diets with these foods one at a time might help to see if you are choosing the correct allergens. It takes about 2 weeks for the foods to go through your systems and milk, so you have to stay completely free that long. For me it would be easier to give up all at once, stay free two weeks and then add one thing at a time to your diet to see reactions.
I went to a pediatric allergist and had both skin and blood tests to confirm the allergies. Skin tests had crazier things than RAST blood tests. Also I watched his own reactions if I made mistakes.

Jen, How is it going? Did you wean or manage to clean your diet? I apologize for my confusion in the last post. It sounds like you have other issues with your child and not about allergies, so ignore that advice.

Thanks for asking! I managed to adjust my diet and am still nursing him. He's been like a different child since we eliminated dairy, gluten, soy, eggs, artificial colors, and flavors. So we are basically on the feingold plus diet! I've discovered that rice is good for most meals and tastes really good with maple syrup. He's started talking a lot more and has been really obedient (as much as a 18 month old can be). We go this week for blood work again. I'll let you know what it comes back with. Thanks for the encouragement!

I'm so glad to hear he's doing well and you're surviving, also! Have you found the Tinkyada rice pasta? Rice is a big friend in this house! eliminating soy would be an even harder challenge to me. Do you have to watch out for lecithin, also?

Tinkyada rice pasta is great! But my big praise is for Namaste brownie mix! It made the best brownies! Well, maybe the best because I've really really wanted something cookie or cake like. But the kids ate them and didn't even know. Declan did not have a reaction so I'm cautiously adding eggs back into the with moderation list. I haven't read anything about lecithin. What is it usually in?
