Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

You all probably don't need this warning, but I thought I'd mention it anyway...even older kids need to be reminded sometimes!

Libby has a few very specific food allergies--cashews and pistachios! We always remind her to check ingredients, and especially check with folks who offer her home made items. Those are odd nuts to find in cooking, but one never knows. The allergies are amazingly mild for nut allergies, but still annoying.

Last night, she took a piece of candy from a wedding favor box, and it did not have ingredients on it. Turns out, the little green stripe in the chocolate was not mint (as she suspected), but pistachio. Her throat and mouth began to itch, and we gave her an anti-histamine...all is well, but it served as a reminder to avoid eating things when the ingredients are a mystery!

Speaking of allergies...I'm allergic to bananas. Strange, I know. Everyone tells me so. I love anything artifically banana flavored (pudding, candy, etc.) but I can't eat the real thing. I get violent stomach cramps and water blisters in my mouth.

Also, another odd reaction, I love getting an Amaretto Sour when we go out to eat with friends. The drink by itself is fine and nuts by themselves are fine. I'm not allergic to either. But, if I eat nuts while drinking an Amaretto Sour, I get violently sick. I won't gore you with the details of how sick.

So I just keep the two separate. Nuts if I'm drinking a cold drink. Amaretto Sour if I'm just eating the meal.

Guess there's some connection between the nuts and ingredients in the drink that don't mix well with my system.

How interesting! None of my children have food allergies (that I know of), but I sort of do.

I get migraines on occasion, mainly sugar or weather related. If I have even the faintest bit of a headache (migraine or other) and eat peanuts or eggs, I'll develop a massive migraine. At any other time, peanuts and eggs are fine. Since I have discovered this through (painful) trial and error, I am now VERY careful of what I eat if my head feels at all out of sorts!

"Cominations" like this and Cay's situation could sure make it difficult to pinpoint what's causing a child trouble.

Cay, my grandpa was violently allergic to bananas. He always complained that the doctors didn't believe him, but if he ate something that had bananas in it, even if he didn't know and couldn't taste it, he would get ill.

There's a lady here who can't mix rice and exercise. If she eats rice and then exercises she goes into anaphlatic (spelling?) shock!

Thanks MacBeth!

Some of these allergies are very interesting! My dh can drink milk or eat cranberries but if he does them together (not something most of us want to mix anyway ) he gets sick. He also avoids milk anytime he's drinking beer.

Now here's a weird one: several years ago I suddenly became allergic to cold air. It has to be bitterly cold and it has to be a slight breeze or more, but any exposed skin on my face or neck will welt up with hives and I will get very fatigued and achy. I do still forget every winter to take along a big scarf or something to cover my face.

I think I have an allergy to thinking about milk and beer together . Beer with a milk chaser, anyone?

Oh yummmmm
As is fairly usual, my descriptive powers have failed me. Does beer at the beginning of the party, then ice cream (or any dairy) later in the party sound better?

Not at all...I just can't let an amusing observation go without a silly comment.
