My 6yo autistic ds has limited language skills. However, yesterday he told me "Dalton sad. LJ hit Dalton. He hurt." I was very pleased as he has never before put together sentences -- ok, thery're missing some verbs -- in this way. When I thought about it, I realized that it was a narration of a sort, and that maybe he is a little closer than I thought to real narrations.
In Christ,
Deborah

That's great Deborah! Also he was connecting an emotion with an action. Isn't that one of the things you work on with him?

As someone who also struggles with teaching my autistic son how to narrate, CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Isn't it great when they start making connections!

Taffy,
I haven't tried to get him to narrate as yet; this was a surprise which made me very happy.

Deborah

Bridget,
You're right. We have been trying to connect actions and emotions. (Sometimes he doesn't believe us....) One thing we have used for recognizing emotions is ..... Thomas the Tank Engine. (His current SLT used this idea after I mentioned it.) Because the engines can't show body language, the expressions tend to be exaggerated. It was helpful for teaching sad, angry, happy, scared, and surprised.
In Christ,
Deborah

Deborah, I am so happy for your son and such an exciting development! My youngest son (4) has PDD-NOS and is speech delayed. We are still trying to get him to talk in sentences rather than just one or two words. It's funny you mention verbs; his ST said we need to work on getting him to use verbs (go mama! eat pizza! bounce the ball!).
Yesterday, walking into speech therapy he said "There that stop sign. Right there!" I could have jumped for joy! (He loves street signs and we always stop to say hello to the stop sign in the parking garage ).
Every little step is a blessing.
