Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A friend in our homeschool group has asked a question for her sister about preparing a child for First Holy Communion who has Aspergers and tends to take things very literally. She was concerned about explaining transubstantiation and how it might scare her child if he took it too literally. Any thoughts or resources on how to help prepare him?

The only thing that comes to mind is reading to him the longer explanation in the Catechism of the Catholic Church about transubstantiation, where it goes the difference between the accidents and spiritual reality of the Eucharist. It would be important to not back down from the truth that yes, this is Christ's flesh and blood but also that yes, it has the appearance, taste, smell, feel of bread and wine. That is where I would start anyhow.

I was thinking that same thing LeeAnn. Give him the words and truth. but be able to clearly explain that it does have the appearance of bread and wine.

You might even explain that first. That when he recieves it will look like bread and wine, and taste like bread and wine.. but the wonderful thing is that it's really the body and blood of Christ.

At some churches we've attended, children are offered the chance to taste unconsecrated hosts and wine so they can experience the sensations prior to their big day.
