Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

doesn't mean your child turns out that way. But you ladies all know that, right?

I was worried going in for my sonogram for baby #10... I'm 41 now. But in prayer I realized that I'd had 9 perfect sonograms, easy births, "healthy" children. But my oldest, a few years ago when she was 14, developed an eating disorder and almost starved to death before we got her weight restored. But the starvation changes their thinking patterns, and makes all of the adolescent confusion going on in their minds worse. Eating disorders cause a malnourished brain from restricting food or binging/purging) that then causes psychological symptoms due to changes in biochemistry from the brain being malnourished.

At any rate, kuddos to all of you. None of us have normal, healthy, perfect children, we all (and our children) have crosses to bear.

Oh, said daughter is almost 18 now, and very smart, thin, and pretty.... obsessed about her weight and clothes but doesn't purge anymore. Very pro-life, no issues getting her to mass or confession, politically conservative, on the honor role at the local high school. But, truly, only about 85% better. We worry about her going off to college and using food (and restricting her eating) as stress relief.

Peace,
Macmom

The little guy looks WONDERFUL! (thanks so much for the prayers!)

As for the daughter- even when you know in your HEAD as a mom that its a mental illness, sometimes your heart is screaming about the VANITY and self-obsession of anorexia and bulimia. But she really made us proud this weekend- let me share...

She had entered the beauty pageant for our local city. I wasn't very happy with it, but she's almost 18 now, and I find it very hard to parent her (afraid she'll turn back to bad relationship with food.) She made the top 10, out of 100 girls- and there was a VERY good chance she would win. Winning meant a $20,000 college scholarship! And she swore that was her main reason for entering in the first place. So there were the 10 finalists on the stage, decked out in their evening ball gowns- stunning. And the host gives each a random question to judge their poise and ability to express themselves with no preparation. Her question was "What makes a good leader?" She took a breath and replied "A good leader is one who doesn't just care for the rich and powerful in the community, but tries to make ways for the least in our society to also succeed... like the unborn."

In the audience, I heard a few gasps, and a few claps. My daughter tells me one judge looks right at her and mouths "What the f^%$?" Other judges grimace at her. I knew she had just blown all chances at winning. But I also knew, no matter how this disorder has a hold on her, there is a right-thinking Catholic inside her still. She won, in our eyes, because she stood up for whats right. Lots of folks came to her after the show and said she should have won, and how bold she was. I was proud of her. (And I hope she has the beauty pageant thing out of her system now!!!!)

Sometimes its hard not to see my daughter as merely her disorder, but I was blessed to catch a glimpse of the girl I raised beneath it all.

Peace,
Macmom

Your last post was so moving.

One thing I would like to suggest, and you may not need this at all, but I'll throw it out there: after being on this forum awhile, I thought wouldn't it be nice to get some support in person? So I called some mothers that I know who have kids with problems, and we have begun a Catholic mothers of special needs children. It is prayer-centered. We meet once a month, at noon, bring food to share (it's all very informal, but we get so few times out that we thought we'd go festive), and we pray together, share together, support each other, all in a non-judgemental way. No one of us is an expert, we are just mothers who need to connect with others who understand what we are going through even if their problems are not ours. It is good for our souls to know that we are not alone and also to know that we can be candid and to have prayer support.

My prayers go out to you and your daughter. What you all have gone through can make you stronger and better.
