Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Yeah! My son is starting to get it! Baby steps, but I rejoice! After initially failing to pass the Barton pre-screening, we worked through the first part of the Lindamood-Bell LiPS program learning how the mouth forms sounds. Then he moved onto Barton's first level. The first two lessons of Barton went quickly, but as soon as he ran into two consonants in a row, he had a difficult time hearing the sounds. That was a rough and slow going. Then last week, we went through the Barton lesson, identifying his tongue and lip position like he did in LiPS. Then, it started to click! He began to identify the sounds accurately. Today, after we resumed following our Thanksgiving break, he sped through the lesson. I had him do the extra practice because it's been such a struggle I thought maybe it was a fluke...But, by george, I think he's got it!

He sometimes tried putting two sounds blended on tiles, but he corrected that quickly if I asked for the tile sound again. Yeah, just one more part of Barton's first lesson before the review.

It's been a long struggle. I'm really, really hopeful that maybe, just maybe, we've passed a huge hurdle that was causing much of his reading difficulty. I'm sure there will be more hurdles, but I'm relieved to see this progress.

For those of you unaware of phonemic awareness, it's the ability to hear the individual sounds within words. To put this post in perspective, my son's non-dyslexic twin sister went through the entire Barton's first lesson in one session--it maybe took a half hour. Contrast that to my son not even being able to start the Bartons program until spending a couple of months learning how to shape the mouth, tongue and lips to produce sounds that he thought were the same but that were really different sounds.

That's wonderful!!!Definitely something to rejoice over!
My dd has trouble with phonemic awareness with two consonants also. Particularly confusing for her are tr and dr. It is slow going, but she is making progress as well.
Hooray for baby steps!!

Yay! I am so happy for you and your ds. I know how exhilerating those steps (no matter how tiny) can be.

I am also happy to hear that you have had a good experience with LIPS. I have been stalling in ordering it for my youngest. She has no phonemic awareness at all. In reading of your success, though, I will order it tomorrow.

Thanks for aharing this with us!

Thanks for sharing my joy!

I wanted to tell someone who would understand what a huge accomplishment this was. I learned about the Barton program here when it seemed everything else I tried wasn't working. Then I learned through the Barton screening that my son's phonemic awareness was as poor as it was.

Julia, I don't think I can say enough good things about the LiPS program! I hope it works as well for you and your daughter as it did for us!
