Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well, we have good news. My little autie will have his FHC by Christmas. This is great news!

I do have some practical concerns.... like clothing. His pants are all elastic waist pants, mostly nice sweat pants; his being potty-trained is still fairly new, and I don't want his clothes to be hard to manage. I am wondering what to dress him in.

A more fun concern is what to give him. He can't read, and I have books of Bible stories. His sister just made him a rosary. Any suggestions?

In Christ,

Deborah,

What a wonderful blessing!!!! I would not worry on the clothing thing. Do you have a consignment or used clothing store near by? If you do, check out the used pants section in his size. In my experience some of those clothes are softer and you might be able to find a nice pair of blue uniform pants that have elastic. Also you might find some well kept long sleeve shirts that don't have that hard new feel to them.

As to what to give him, would he enjoy a picture book of saints? Pauline Press has some great coloring books too.

Good Luck!

How exciting! Congratulations on your son's upcoming First Holy Communion!

I also wouldn't worry too much about the clothing issue. You can actually find some very nice dress pants with an elastic waist. If you need to buy new, just wash it a few times if new clothes are a problem for your son but I'm sure you already know that.

As for a gift, might I suggest music? My autie boy has sensitive hearing but happens to enjoy music quite a bit. A couple of Christmas's ago, I received a copy of Handel's Messiah that he absolutely LOVED! I heard it everyday for about 6 weeks while we did our school work. Anyway, it would be perfect for the season and the occasion...

Another suggestion might be a children's book of the Mass? Or maybe a VeggieTale DVD? Although the cross with the liturgical colour looks absolutely adorable... have fun deciding!

Susan, Mimi, and Ladybugs,

I think I have found a gift. I had forgotten that I bought a set of the Adventures from The Book of Virtues dvds on the Amazon Marketplace. That would be perfect for him as video is his medium and leads to good discussions. It might also help prepare him for confession...

As for clothes, thanks for the encouragements. I will look for some nice pants.Do you think he should have a tie or do y'all think a turtleneck or nice knit shirt would do? I come from a non-Catholic family, and he is my only boy so I don't have a great feel for what's expected. My dh is little help. He doesn't pay attention to that sort of thing. I want to balance a special outfit with his comfort so I need all the input I can get.

I just hope he isn't too big for some things. I just got a shock when we checked his feet last weekend. He grew 1.5 sizes since we last checked in May or April. He is now wearing men's shoes -- no more velcro!

Thanks!

In Christ,

I think a turtleneck will or knit shirt would be fine. My son wore a button-up shirt - a true act of mortification for him - but I didn't make him wear a tie. One family had their two boys in jeans, cowboy boots and a western shirt. They were all very clean and the clothes looked very new - they run a cattle ranch and western is definitely their style of choice. So, really, it's an open book as far as what's appropriate.

I think boys of any age look very handsome in turtlenecks. Maybe you can pair that with nice elastic-waist, soft fabric pants/sweatpants in a neutral color?

Unless you're part of a super-formal parish, that should be fine.

You'll probably need to dream up a gift list for family and friends, not just for yourself. Music is definitely nice (that is what we normally give for FHC gifts), but you might think about saint-related DVDs (animated or not) and other religious-themed DVDs (Ben-Hur?) for your gift list. If your son likes to express his faith through art (sounds like he does), art supplies are always a welcome gift.

If your son enjoys praying the rosary, there are audio CDs available with the rosary prayers and/or songs on them. (Or, a creative relative could make one!)

I'm overjoyed for you and your family. You must be so thrilled!
