Narrations have been the bane of our homeschool this past year. My son only started homeschooling last spring and I have been pulling my hair out trying to get some indication that he's listening to and understanding what we're reading. I posted a while back about discovering how his weakness with sequencing is making narrations difficult. Working on that has been helping somewhat. However, I realized that he had another major problem that Charlotte Mason often brought up. My son has a very low attention span.

Our speech-path lent us a program that has been helping with this. It's a CD with accompanying workbook. There are 30 short stories and 4 levels of play. The first level asks 6 questions of each story. The questions are asked immediately after the answer is stated in the story. The user is given two options to choose from. Through the 4 levels, time between reading the story and answering the comprehension questions. The workbook has sequencing pictures which help with the student retelling the story.

He really enjoys this and has finally started reading books for enjoyment again. I had been quite frustrated when he was at school as the only books he was interested in were pre-school level (he was doing better before he started school

Narrations are the bane of our homeschool too. LB has all the problems that you stated. I'm really interested in that product and may purchase it. Can you just read it to him or do you have to use the CD-ROM? Does the CD-ROM do anything different than the actual story?

LB's OT is working with him on this particular problem. She has him write down cue words to help him narrate. It helps to start small and build up to longer stories--to start narrating a page at a time for instance.

LB's only interest in books are nonfiction books with great photographs. At least he has really great visual taste

You can use the CD-ROM either way. Our special ed person (not sure of her specific title) theorizes that he may be able to answer questions with the computer better than in person because the computer is less stressful to deal with. The computer's voice doesn't change with each retelling of the story and the tone is consistent and pleasant. I am planning on going through all 30 stories in the CD-ROM at each level and then through the worksheets and resequncing pictures to re-tell the stories. I am hoping that by then, he'll will have the idea and we can move on to more challenging stuff.

Have you used "Teach Me Language" by Sabrina Freeman? I've had some success with it but have to admit that I don't seem to be very consistent with using it. Any opinions?

I do have "Teach Me Language", but have not utilized it yet. It's on my list of things to get to. I have to admit to feeling a bit overwhelmed at times with all the research and planning I have to do.
