Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just wnat to share my excitment!
A lovely lady in our hs group read one of my blog posts about the reactions I get from shoppers on those bad days. She commented that she would have been one of those people that would say "Just give him a good smack." She said that she didn't understand ASD. So I blogged about what ASD means for our family. She now *gets* it and has shared her new understanding with others on her own blog!

I know it's a tiny victory, but it feels great to know that one of the smack 'em crew has changed their tune!

Yay!

Tricia,

How wonderful! You did a great job.

I remember well those sorts of unpleasant reactions from other shoppers and clerks with my brother and my middle ASD child. Things are somewhat better now, but still people can be judgmental about behaviors they don't understand. I'm so happy for you!

It also makes me remember when I was in college. People would ask about my family, and the fact that I have a brother would come up. I would have to explain that he was autistic. They always thought I was saying "artistic" and would ask what medium he used. I had real trouble trying to explain him to others until "Rainman." He is not much like Rainman, but at least RM gave me a beginning with other people.

Fortunately, my little autie is usually easy in public. It also helps that there are five adults in his immediate family, so if he starts to lose it, I can shop while someone else takes him out. (Usually just the threat can make him settle down -- he knows it's a very valid threat.) In that way, my life is much easier with him than it was with his older siblings.

In Christ,
