I think I'm ruining my daughter's desire for real food by including her meds in her food. She doesn't have many teeth -- just the two bottom ones even though she is a year old. (I think this is very cute by the way )
Any tips on helping her to take her meds with each feeding? I'll ask the doctor as well. I just thought I would also ask for mom-advice.

My baby has only four teeth, and I've been grumbling about that (so much misery, so little result!)
I give him his pain relief in a syringe, but one with quite a wide end so it's not too scratchy in his mouth. It also fits in the medicine bottle so that saves sticky spillages. I find that if I squirt it in the back of his mouth (wide open after a tickle), it stays in quite well.
This is usually just once a day though -- I'm not sure what I would do if I had to give it more frequently. (Is this liquid pain relief or some other medication?)

I don't know if this would help, but we always gave my sister her Phenobarbital (terrible tasting medicine) in a little jelly on a spoon. It was the only thing strong enough to cut the taste.

It's a granular type medicine - no taste (I think) just extra texture. It's with every feeding.

What are you mixing it in?
When ds10 had to take steriods at a two year old, I would put it in ice cream, really it was the only way he would take it, and the coldness of the ice cream provided a numbing effect too.
Can you mix it with applesauce or pears? They already have some texture to them so they might hide the med a bit. I would also talk to the doctor or pharmacist, the med might come in a liquid form, then you could do the whole squirt, hold the nose, blow in their face thing...that is always a lot of fun
Is it something that you can mix in juice? Or will it dissolve in her mouth if you put it in there and you are able to keep her from spitting it out????
Helen, I so feel for you and your little sweetie. This topic occupied hours of conversation when my guy was on a lot of meds.....and he was older. I'm praying.

Sorry, Helen, as it's granular my advice is utterly useless. The best I can do is 'A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down'...!
Could you separate giving medicine and feeding by letting her feed herself as much as possible and just popping the spoon in yourself for the medicine? (With sugar or other appetising item.) I don't spoon feed my baby at all, he's fed himself from the start, and maybe that way she could enjoy the food itself. Just a thought.

My mom always gave my brother his slew of meds in applesauce.
Maybe you could pick just one food to put meds in - like the applesauce, or whatnot - and just do that somewhat seperate, so it isn't in all her food? Yeah, she will probably not enjoy that particular food so much, but then it is just one food, and not associtaed with eating in general...if that makes sense...

I appreciate your advice Elizabeth. Thank you ... corn syrup does work.
Bridget, I've also used jelly. But she seems young to give a lot of sugar.

Thanks Laura...this is probably what I need to do. My daughter hasn't been eating alot and I thought she might be filling up on the food I'm giving her to get her mediciine in.

Thanks Mary Chris. I guess this has been causing me more anxiety than I realized.

Wanted to jump in and say that I used to be a pediatric nurse in a former life, and I had one kid take her medicine in a spoonful of butter! Hey, whatever works. :) She had CF, so no worries about the extra calories from that at least, she needed them. I used peanut butter with my nephew before, but I found the medication didn't seem to work as well, maybe the fat interfered with the absorption of that particular medication. We've used jam, and yogurt, spoons of ice cream, pudding...now he can swallow pills, praise the Lord!!!

What about all fruit jam instead of jelly. Still sugar, but fruit sugar and more natural.

The butter was a huge success! I mixed a little baby oatmeal in. Milk products tend to break down the medicine. I'll have to check to see if this is effective in the long run. (My daughter has cf as well.)

Helen,
I wouldn't worry about sugar or calories....just brush her teeth when she gets them..I can really, really relate. IT IS STRESSFUL!!! This is one big reason why I don't get too upset about the last two dc having g-tubes, they do come in handy sometimes!! If "milk" products break down the medicine, maybe you could try an alternative. We can't have milk and use a margarine called "Earth Balance". My sister, after having it, decided it tasted far better than any other dairy margarine, and that is what they use. It tastes great!!
The other one is "Soy Garden". They are made by the same company. It is soy based, no milk, comes in small tubs.
God Bless, you Helen, and your little one!

Fluff worked tonight!
I have to keep changing things around otherwise she gets bored.
I was excited that 4 pills went down so easily!
