Has anyone tried the Davis Dyslexia Correction Program after reading the book, "The Gift of Dyslexia" by Ron Davis?

I would love to hear anyone's story.

Thx!

I have not used it but I know there was discussion about it on the HeartofReading yahoo group...I hope it is OK to say that here! You could join and do a search for it. They discuss dyslexia a lot.

can I ask, a few months later, what you found out? I am in the middle of "The Gift of Dyslexia" and bubbling over with questions. (for some reason, I can't access that Yahoo group.)

I was going to PM, but I'm wondering if anyone else out there has any experience with this?

I went to a talk and found out a little - it isn't much studied which may mean something and may not mean anything at all, kwim. It is outrageously expensive. Since we aren't even convinced we are dealing with dyslexia, I've kind of dropped that as they never really answered my question - trying to get a handle on how/why they think that their exercises will help my particular child.

I am very, very interested in other folks experience so I'll be looking in.

I did have my son do a little clay work & I discovered that he really didn't know the alphabet that well at all. We worked on it forwards & backwards which seemed to help him. When I considered purchasing All About Spelling, I knew I had to get the big magnetic boards as alphabetizing the letters would really help him - & it has!

There are many people (look at the Davis boards) who say the program is miraculous. In most cases, I think these kids really fit the dyslexia profile. The lady in my area who does the training says it worked miracles for her son, which is why she decided to become a trainer.

I don't personally know anyone who has used it. Abigail Marshall who handles the administration for the website wrote a useful book called "The Everything Parent's Guide for Children with Dyslexia Guide". I was able to get it at the library.

In the end, I settled on Great Leaps for fluency and All About Spelling. This has been a phenomenal combination for my son and he has really made great strides.

I looked into the Davis tutoring as well..I didn't like the set up of the tutor, (in her home, all day for a week....hard access for me to be there). We went with a non profit organization that has tutors that use the Orton-Gillingham method. I know I could have bought the Davis material and tried this at home..but I just couldn't swing one more thing with two medically intense kiddos already. In less than a year, my 10yo ds has gone from first grade level to low average fourth. We are pretty certain ds has dyslexia, he shared 98% of the "qualities" of people with dyslexia...the non profit couldn't "diagnose" ds, but did an assesment that was very, very helpful. Everything I read about dyslexia certainly shows up with ds as well.
Just my experience...

I told dh that if we ever move, Mrs. K. (our retired school teacher tutor who loves homeschooling --has to move with us!!!
