Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Written by my daughter about her little brother-- it made me cry over my coffee this morning. Thought you all might like it too.

What a wonderful article! You must be so proud of her Willa. I'm going to post a link to this on my blog. Have you thought of sending it off to some mags. to get a wider readership?

It is a very moving article, Willa. Good for her for responding to that article.

Thank you for sharing your daughter's beautiful writing, Willa. Aidan is a very special and blessed child. To see a special child as a blessing is in itself a blessing, and your daughter has helped all of us to see that so clearly.

Peace,
Nancy

Willa,

I was very happy to read your dd's article and saddened to hear that someone else wrote about an autistic sibling ruining her life.I can only hope that the second person will gain a better perspective in time....

I can't write about my severely autistic brother as well as your dd writes about Aidan, but I love my brother and don't regret that my parents (against the doctors' advice back then) kept him home. It required sacrifices of us all (respite care didn't exist back then), but I'm glad my parents kept him home as long as they could. Bottom line: He ain't heavy; he's my brother. (And he's about to turn 50 !)

In Christ,
Deborah

Our deacon told a similar story about his younger brother -- I think he had brain injury from seizures or birth trauma -- I can't remember the details. Anyway, he was profoundly retarded, and the deacon's parents wouldn't have him sent to an institution, which was the custom in those times. It changed our deacon's life, he said, but he also felt he wouldn't have had it any other way.

Willa,
It's funny I happened on the article at your blog today and didn't see it linked here before. I just wanted to say I think you have a pretty wonderful daughter and it makes me overcome with warmth and love to read such well thought out and heartfelt words.
God bless your family.

I know that although there are times that my older three struggle to understand the special needs of my youngest, they adore him and couldn't imagine life any other way. He's been a huge blessing, even through the challenging times.

Your daughter's story was wonderful, and it was such a joy to be able to share it with my oldest daughter. Please thank your dear daughter for us!
