Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone have a place she has had a good experience reading and/or posting about experiences with kids' (possible) autism spectrum disorders? Rather than spend a lot of time blindly exploring what's out there I thought I'd ask for any recommendations from Catholic HSing mothers. There's so much to ponder and there seem to be so many approaches to the subject. I guess I'm looking for something that's not strongly affiliated with any "camp" except "we love our kids and want to find out what is best for them."

Hi,

There's a great, active e-mail list for folks hsing kids on the spectrum. People who are on the list will sometimes post "My younger child is showing some signs of ASD...what do you think?" messages, so you don't have to feel you need a firm diagnosis to join.

There'd s full gamut of members, from secular to Protestant to Catholic, from do-every-medical-intervention to just-let-the-child-be, some with kids who don't speak or use the toilet, others with kids who are only slightly quirky.

The only camp that may be overrepresented slightly is the "a parent can help her child as much or more than any professional" camp, which isn't surprising, given that it's a homeschool list.

Here is a link--subscription info is on the right.

Good luck!

I am not on any of the autism / spectrum lists anymore. I was. I tried out different ones, hoping to find a good fit.

But, there is just so much...that I find distasteful on the lists. So many extremes, and some other things, too, and I ended up not finding them very helpful at all.

:(

Thanks Amanda, I'll check it out. I'm so overwhelmed by all the info and the different theories/approaches/whatever...

Laura, I can imagine what I might find on some of those lists, and being fairly new to this (though I've been reading about autism with less personal investment for a long time) I definitely don't want to get a distorted view by choosing the wrong list or "support" group.
