Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Had my first appointment today with a pediatrician (my doctor forwarded me to a pediatrician and the neuropsych. department) for my ds13. She was very verbose (2 hour appointment, with me butting in when I could), sort of helpful, high on talking down to me side, brought up a mix of emotions in me, reccomended a 'great' psychologist with a huge pricetag (not against this if it is worth it)....I am all a mix of emotions and burnt out now. I know this is step one in a long process but I found it hard to take. She was SO defensive about Public School when I was in no way taking any shots- it sort of took away from the appointement....

To follow my saga this was the last post on it

A Difficult Day

Big hugs to you, Kristie. We went to a psychologist first for my son. He ended up pushing the public school thing very hard and medication (ADHD was the diagnosis with not a mention about autism). Did she have a diagnosis? If so, do you agree?

Oh, ugh. I'm so sorry Kristie!

We were sent first to a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist for my ds9. The Psych recommended meds after spending about a half hour with him (he was 4!) and said nothing about Asperger's...because his speech had been a little delayed and that wasn't a "standard" Aspie trait...they went on about OCD....

Then to the Neuropsych at the Hospital....I can't even remember that appointment...

I do remember public school programs being pushed...

Our Dr. was finally able to get a referral approved to a Developmental Pediatrician. It took months and months from when we started with the psych....

Seeing the Developmental Ped. was worth the frustration, and a totally different experience. He was not anti-med, but said there was absolutely no need for them with regards to DS9. He felt he could make case for HFA or Asperger's, but felt Aspie was a better fit. He spent SO MUCH TIME observing, working with, and really seeing DS. He had suggestions for books and websites for us, suggestions on things to work on with Homeschooling (or if we wanted to send him to school he would call and speak to his teacher's to explain ds's needs, etc.)
Really, it was a totally different experience than anything we'd had up to that point, and he asked us so many questions too - trusting our judgement, etc.

BIG HUGS TO YOU!

Unfortunately here in Manitoba, from what the ped. said today, developmental Ped. only work with preschool children (as there is that assumption that the school system takes over from there..) From what I have heard from you ladies the dev. ped. would have been a good fit. For some reason the whole psychologist thing has me a bit uneasy, no good reasons for it except for probably just not understanding the process yet.

I think what miffed me was some her comments about homeschooling early on- generally I am quite gracious about this but I think I was already having a bit of a time. She just had some pretty outdated ideas about the little bubbles that our kids apparently live in (I should have showed her my calender!!), and then the classic one about 'How do I know my son is comprehending the material he is reading, how would a homeschooler know that?'- oh, I had a million answers to that but I wisely bit my tongue and casually remarked that I would find it hard to believe that a child would read 6 hours a day (on average) if he didn't understand what he was reading, or wasn't enjoying it immensely. But I am digressing....

Thank you for the virtual hugs. I appreciate so much being able to share my journey here with people who can relate.
