Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 3 yo son has Sensory Processing Issues, Speech Delay, and is possibly on the autism spectrum as well. We are going through the school district for therapy and they run a special needs inclusive preschool program. He is excited about going, but only if I stay. He's already told me that if I leave him- he'll walk home. Besides warning his teacher that she should make sure the door is locked- does anyone have any advice for me?
My older kids went to preschool but they had no special needs or separation issues. I waffled back and forth about just taking him for therapy vs. preschool, but he's to get 90 minutes of speech and 90 minutes ot per week, they can't be done back to back. So I'd be doing nothing but driving him over there. The preschool is nice- 3 teachers to 4 kids in his room with a cap of 10 kids.
So anyway, I know he'll cry, but has anyone BTDT?

Jen,

Yes, I have BTDT. My youngest dd (now 20) who is autistic went to an ECC for a half-day 5x week starting at 3 1/2. I don't know if I have any advice about his leaving the classroom.* I do have some advice about monitoring the teacher. The first teacher my dd had was a disaster. (The second one was okay, the third was fantastic, and the fourth was inadequate.) Make sure the fit between your son and his primary teacher is a good one.

*This brings to mind what my autistic brother did when he was enrolled in a residential program for autistic children.(At the time, the only good programs for autistic children were residential.) He actually did try to run home! (We lived about 45 miles away, and he had no idea how to get there. He was just under twelve and very low-functioning.) As far as I know, he never tried again..... Actually, the program was (for the time) great.

My dd did enjoy the bus -- it was the best part of the school day other than playing outside. Maybe you could play that up? Or make a schedule that includes the bus rides, school activities, and home with PECS so he knows exactly what to expect?

I do sympathize. That dd (the first one I wrote about above) was a very non-compliant child;

Btw, starting in first grade that dd was hsed and visited the school 2x to 3x a week. I put her appointments back to back with my older ASD child when I could. After a year or two, we only got SLT for the girls. Now my ds gets SLT once a week through the school and once a week privately. It's working very well. I must confess that he is now my only student, and I can really focus on him and his needs. As he sadly points out, "My sisters are all grown up."

In Christ,
Deborah

Deborah,

Thanks for the help. I'll let you know how it goes today. I'm probably more nervous than he is.

Jen
