Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd is 9 and has di george, it is getting really fustrating trying to teach her english and maths. I am using starfsll and maths u see, and although she has progressed she has only just finished primer. Does it matter if she is not at the same level as everyone else her age. She can do pages of things and then, like at christmas, we had a break of two weeks and she's forgotten it all. She's fine at other subjects as we use living books. Am i best to keep going incase she fogets it all or have a break and start again. Thanks.

Hi Emmsie,

My neighbour's 16yo son has some very similar syndrome (he has repeatedly tested negative for di george, though everything points in that direction). From watching D's struggles and progress, I would say just keep plugging on and not worry about what level others her age are at - work with her where she is at, and focus on necessary skills as much as possible. D has spent the last three years at a special ed school where they do this - for example, maths is largely practical (handling money and so on). When he was in mainstream school he was completely lost when expected to work at his age level (maths is one of his big challenges).

Thanks i know what you mean. She can just about add and take away up to ten and count in twos, fives and tens.
I feel like i'm failing even though school failed her worse. At least she can do those things now.
Its the reading that really bothers me as you need it in everyday life.

Yes, school can fail these kids very badly. D was lucky as he (finally) ended up in the right place. He has been accepted for college next year to train to be a chef ... these kids can succeed, it just has to be at their own pace. Hang in there with the reading. Try to remember that this is a long game and not to get frustrated if progress is slow.

Oh, I promise I'll post a coherent note tomorrow, but right now my head and chest are so congested I can barely think. But we have a wonderful and challenging son, adopted from Hong Kong, who has DiGeorge, or 22q11 Syndrome. I will post about our "Dan the Man" tomorrow. Reading has been killer but despite the anecdotal literature on the web, math is his strong suit. That and being irresistable!
