Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A friend in our homeschool group just had a beautiful baby boy who has Down Syndrome. We would like to give her a new baby shower since this is #6 and wanted to know if there are any things the baby might need (along with the usual new baby stuff like onesies and diapers) that she might not have. Any thoughts on special items that might be helpful that we don't know about? Any specific resources or books that might help her or her husband? Thanks in advance!

When my daughter Christina was born with Down syndrome, there weren't as many great books out as there are today, but I enjoyed, "Sometimes Miracles Hide" sold by Elizabeth Ministry, with the lovely 1994 Christian song by that name and letters from parents of special children. This got me through the adjustment period.
Also the book "Gifts: mothers share how children with Down syndrome have enriched their lives" though not particularly Catholic has 63 inspiring stories, and finally, this new book My Child My Giftwhich was just reviewed on Catholic Exchange today.
Monica Rafie of Be Not Afraid.net who wrote the review and I are collecting stories of Catholic moms with special needs children for a book whose forward will be written by Fr. Frank Pavone. If you or anyone would like to contribute, they can email me from the blog I write. My blog Cause of Our Joy tells about my life with Christina, who is now five. When your friend is ready, I'd love to have her visit us there.I'll be praying for her.

Thank you so much! You mentioned "the adjustment period". Is this something that most parents go through? Apparently they had been told that DS was a possibility based on some ultrasounds, but I don't know how prepared for the reality of it any parent really can be.

Also, do you have any recommendations for things the baby might need? Someone suggested music, rattles, toys to help engage and stimulate their little guy or one of those seat to help them sit up. Thanks again for you help!
