Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I believe my little one is color blind. He can't see red. He calls it green or yellow. He knows his other colors. Blues, purples, pinks, he is 100% right. And he always knows that green is green. But he thinks red is green too.

I have no experience with this. What adjustments will I have to make to teach him science, art, etc? Does it affect his ability to read? He is almost three now, so I have plenty of time, but if I am supposed to be doing something to help him I'd like to know.

I am going to mention it to his Ped at our next check-up.

It sounds like he is about the right age to make this diagnosis. Too early and it might just be that he hasn't learned his colors.

My husband is color blind and so is one of his brothers. My dad is also, but so far, none of our children are. (It is passed on the mother's side in case you were curious.)

There are a couple of different "variations" of color blindness. Red/Green is the most common and basically shows itself to be what you have described- an inability to distinguish between red, green and yellow.

My husband's advice is this: Dress him until he wants to dress himself and then buy him clothes that all match. He once almost bought a suit that he thought was a "nice brown" to wear to his sister's wedding and it was olive green (not the nice olive, but a putrid olive color!)

He shouldn't have any problems with reading or science, but he will have to learn that red is not what he sees it as once he gets older and that might be a little frustrating.

My husband remembers his family talking a walk one time and commenting to his brother about a bright orange VW bug. They both thought it was the most unusual shade of orange... they both thought it looked like a giant pumpkin. Their sisters laughed their heads off because apparently the car was really green, but the two boys didn't see it that way.

There is a benefit that my husband has discovered and that is while he may not be able to identify colors correctly, he can distinguish between similar shades better than other people. Two colors, both in the brown family will look very different to him when my eye can barely tell them apart.

You Dr. should be able to do a simple test for it, but here is an online one.

Thanks Matilda, for the info. The site you mentioned is great and I will try to give my little one a "test" when he is in a quiet mood.

My husband is also colorblind like Matilda's. His wardrobe consists of all neutrals that would match with anything. He also has problems with dark olive greens and brown. That is a funny story about the suit! Some very bright colors look dull to him and dull ones bright. He sometimes has to "think" awhile before figuring out what color something is. People must think he's a bit odd in department stores when he asks our children "What color is this, please?" But it never hurt his reading. He has two Masters degrees and teaches Latin and Theology just fine. It is passed through the mother, but it also supposedly skips a generation. So Matilda, your daughter's sons may have it someday! Mine too! Like your husband says, mine also claims a superior ability to discern color in certain situations. He can look at black and white photos of cars and tell what color they are by the way the light is glinting off them. I didn't believe this at first. But he has been right so many times!

I will have to ask my husband about the black and white picture thing. I do know that when I was searching for a color to paint our kitchen cabinets all of the cream colors I kept choosing would end up looking pink to him. I couldn't see any pink but he was really bothered by it. I talked to the guy at the paint counter and he said it was probably one of the tints called "burnt ochre", I think. He found the one shade of cream that didn't have that tint in it. I picked up three other colors as possible choices (most of them had only the tiniest bit of the offending tint) and painted all of the samples on 4 separate pieces of wood. Husband was able to spot the only one without "burnt ochre" because it was the only one that didn't look "pink" to him!

Yes! Yes! That is so funny! Last summer when we were painting the boys room I picked this lovely Fog Blue but it looked positively PURPLE to him!!! I ended up returning it because no matter how handsome it really was I couldn't bear the thought of my husband seeing purple every time he went into the BOYS room! We opted for Navajo White, which is kinda boring, but "safe." I always feel bad for him in the Fall. We live in New England and I can tell he doesn't quite get the beauty of the leaves, though he tries to see it. When we all get to Heaven it will ALL be beautiful to all of us.

P.S. My husband could only do the black-and-white magic trick with cars. Somehow those metallic colors shine through!
