Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Says the pediatrician to the child with Tourette Syndrome: Have you learned to tell time yet?

Child: Oh, yes, I love clocks!

Dr.: What time do you go to bed to sleep?

Child: 9:11.

Dr. Nine or eleven?

Child: No, 9:11.
I get in bed at 9 after I read stories and it takes me eleven minutes to fall asleep. Never 12.

Dr: Oh, and when do you get up?

Child: 6:50

Dr. writes down 7:00

Child (noticing the 7): NO, not 7. I never sleep that late. I always wake up at 6:50. And then I have my eggnog and Magic School Bus is on 7:38 after that really short show and the commercial.

Dr: And what time is lunch?

Child: Noon, except yesterday it was at 11:52.

later...
Dr: Do you ever wet the bed?
Mom: Only if he has Gatorade after noon.
Child: Actually, it's only if it's after 2:15.

and then...
Dr: Are you excited about Michael going to GMU?
Child: Yes, it's only 38 minutes from my house and one time we got there in 34 minutes.

Dr: He's a little OCD, yes?

Just a little...

All in all, it was a great visit. And we all agreed to just keep on keeping on.

I can't imagine, but there are more than one of those types around here...It's rather remarkable how well we all co-exist.

Too funny! I guess you never have to worry about knowing what time it is!

Elizabeth, oh how I am enjoying this! Dh and I are OCD, along with five OCD children, all of varying degrees mind you!

That's incredible, Elizabeth. Around here we have the opposite problem -- no one has much concept of time passing, not even the parents. We are sort of on the ADD side. We could use a timekeeper amongst us

So he told you to just keep on doing what you're doing? That's good

We've got both--OCD and ADD and that presents--ahem-- challenges in and of itself .

She talked to him for a good while. He did the eye-blinking tic. He repeated his words to himself after he spoke to her. He gave her a real accurate picture of the time obsession. But he was also his own very endearing self.Maybe it's just that I so "Get" him, but this doesn't ruffle my feathers nearly like Christian's (and others') ADD and total unawareness of time. It's easier to live with in many ways. Medication for the tics is a big deal and it just doesn't seem necessary right now. We are working with him on awareness and she thinks he might just "outgrow" it all to the point where it's barely noticeable socially...

We just ignore my son's tics, and we've never had anybody really mention them. (Of course, he doesn't have any tics that really interfere with his life either.) We've been told that the tics will probably disappear/get much better by the late teenage years.

I'm glad to hear the doctor's visit went well. My ds doesn't seem to have OCD, but ADHD, sensory problems... those we definitely deal with!

Two of my boys have had tics on and off...the tics seem to come and go in intensity....One is way on the OCD side of things.....anxiety at times...and one is on the ADD side of things. Bet you can guess which two argue and tussel the most in this house?

My doc agreed, tics are tough to treat with meds......

Thanks for sharing, Elizabeth...I think those of us with special kiddos live in parallel universes.
