Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Oh, Yes!

Little Daughter of the Snow is a new illustrated version of Arthur Ransome's tale from his Favorite Russian Fairy Tales.

The girls and I love Matrioshka dolls. When I worked at the church, our pastor made a trip to Russia and brought me and the other secretary a Matrioshka doll straight from Russia.

We have The Littlest Matryoshka by Corine Demas Bliss and The Magic Nesting Doll by Jacqueline K. Ogburn.

This will be a new one to add to our collection. Thanks for bringing it to our attention, MacBeth.

Donna,

There was a great thread on Russia a while back that included some picture book recommendations. Also, search for the word Russia to pull up some other threads. Under the February Composer is Tchaichovsky, who is Russian, with some suggested books there.

HTH!

Hi Donna,

The Kingfisher Book of Tales from Russia by James Mayhew is one of our favorites . Beautiful illustrations.

Many of Polacco's books have an Eastern European feel. The Ukraine, up until recently, has always been Russia influenced and so that's why Polacco's books have that "theme".

She's got Thunder Cake and other books that are about Eastern Europeans here in the states....a very importat aspect.

Enjoy your search!

Easter Eggs for Anya

MaryM wrote:

The Wolfhound (Kristine Franklin) - Set in Tsarist Russia. A boy finds a half frozen borzoi (Russian wolfhound) and nurses it back to health. Adventure follows.

Sasha's Matrioshka Dolls (Jana Dillon) - Set in old Moscow, is an entertaining story about a boxmaker who carves matrioshka (nesting) dolls for his granddaughter. Has fun, folksy illustrations.

Philipok - Adaptation of a short story by Leo Tolstoy. It's about a little boy in 19th century Russia who wants to go to school with his big brother, but his mother says he is too young. One day he sneaks off to school. Cute story about learning.

A Symphony of Whales (Steve Schuch) - Set in a native village in Siberia. It's based on a true story of villagers and a Russian icebreaker ship saving thousands of beluga whales who were trapped in the Senyavina Strait by ice.

The Miracle of St. Nicholas mentioned here is one of my all time favorite books. I cry everytime. About the faith in Russia which was suppressed.

I thought I would make mention of a beautiful book that I acquired only fairly recently - it is called: The Wonderful Life of Russia's Saint Sergius of Radonezh by Alvin Alexsi Currier.

It is a beautiful picture book - A4 size with pictures that are painted to a very high standard that have an 'orthodox' feel to them.

St Sergius' life is a miraculous one which is told in great detail and it is written in a lyrical or poetical style.
