Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I would like to know if there is anyone out there with a Downs child who is deaf and learning/using sign language? My niece (4) has Downs and is using sign language. My kids and I are learning to sign and I have some questions.

Maria, my daughter(nealy 5) has Downs and seems to hear OK, but won't cooperate with the audiologist enough to discover any hearing loss. We've tried several times, but she won't wear the earphones!
Her speech is difficult even for her family to decipher, but I believe this is par for the course with Downs children, and may not be indicative of a hearing loss. My sympathy is for your niece's family, who is dealing with deafness besides the Downs.

My son is 50% deaf and we have been using signing times to teach sign language. We don't need it but I really recommend these videos. They are just wonderful and the kids all seem to love them.

My dd who has DS is 3. We also use the Signing Time videos. THEY are SUPERB! Her hearing is fine, but she doesn't use spoken words yet. She began signing before she was one. (Milk- nursing- was her first sign...)
What specific questions do you have?
Yours in Christ,
Kathy
