Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have any experience with OCD, know of good resources, and/or know of natural ways to help a child with OCD?

I received the following email from a friend tonight and it broke my heart.
Christine,
I have a prayer request, but I need it to be discreet for the time being. Approximately, two weeks ago, our son, Joseph, began to exhibit full-blown symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and quickly went downhill to the point of not being able to function. He's doing a little better now, but is definitely not functioning normally and in need of prayers. Basically, it has to do with serotonin in the brain and uncontrollable feelings of anxiety and in his case, an irrational fear of germs. If you Google it, you can find a pretty good description. The pediatrician immediately prescribed a form of Prozac which we have thus far shelved. We saw a therapist last week and have another appointment coming up, but he also would lean in the direction of the meds with therapy. I have slept on the floor of his room for the last two weeks as his anxiety is very high at bedtime. He views his bed as a germ-free zone and takes great pains to keep from "contaminating" it. He has washed his hands until they are cracked, swollen, red and dry. He will not let his arms relax to touch his body and holds them up all day long. I've found out that in order for a body to produce serotonin, it need tryptophan (sp?) like you find in turkey, bananas, pineapple, milk and salmon. Of those foods, Joseph only drinks milk. About a year ago, he went overboard on the handwashing and didn't like touching doorknobs, but then he got better. I am wondering if he got better because spring and summer came and the sunlight also helps serotonin levels so I thought it was a phase. Now with the change in seasons, bad weather, daylight savings ending and a growth spurt, and poor diet, I am wondering if it didn't tip him over the edge. However, I don't really know and the pediatrician never asked about diet at all. I am afraid if they start him on meds, we may never get him off. I also don't know if it really is something that could be cured by diet or if it is a malfunction of the brain. He needs the prayers (and dealing with him--so do we), but I also want to see if he acts differently when confronted with normal behavior by strangers. If everyone knows, they might treat him differently and then he won't have to try to work to overcome the anxiety. But on the other hand, he acts so strangely that I can't see not explaining it to people. We had Thanksgiving here and he wouldn't let his cousins in his room or allow them to touch his toys (but he hasn't touched any of them for two weeks). Just yesterday, another symptom appeared--constant blinking of eyes. Anyway, please pray for him and if you come across any information that you think might be helpful, please let me know. I am sure that God has plans for this family through this journey with Joseph. I am trying to remember to keep Jesus with me constantly. It is very trying as Joseph can take as long as three hours to get ready for bed, does not want to put his clothes on in the morning and does not want to touch his school papers or pencil. In this condition, he can't play with his neighbor friends either and when they find out, I can only think of one who will be at all kind. It is just so strange to have experienced him go down hill so quickly, but I have read other stories on the internet with very similar descriptions of how they were normal one day and then started this kind of behavior the next. Everyone thinks he must have seen something, but that's really not how it works. He knows it is illogical, but he can't stop the feelings of anxiety so at times he cries when he is compelled to wash and really doesn't want to. Well, got to go. Thanks.

Joseph is 9 years old and a wonderful boy. My oldest daughter has enjoyed playing with him when our families have been together.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Christine,

I just did a quick google on this and cognitive behaviour therapy comes up quite a bit as being even more important than drug therapy. Finding therapists trained in its use for OCD appears to be a challenge though.

From http://www.raysahelian.com/obsessivecompulsivedisorder.html:

Natural Treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
There is little research regarding the natural treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder. However, since SSRIs have been found to be helpful in some patients, it is interesting to wonder whether 5-HTP, the serotonin precursor, may also have some benefit. I personally have not used 5-HTP for obsessive compulsive disorder in my practice, but I do have experience using this supplement for anxiety. The adult dose is normally 50 mg once or twice a day, and half or a third for a child. Other interesting option could be kava and inositol. Kava should not be used all the time, but perhaps every other day. Please discuss with your doctor this natural option before using it.

Obsessive compulsive disorder treatment
While both psychotherapy and medication can be effective for children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder, therapy may be the best choice. Such non-drug treatment, specifically a process involving exposure and response prevention (ERP), is not as widely available as medication, but it appears to be associated with fewer residual symptoms. ERP is more effective in the short term and it lasts longer than medication. ERP gives kids with OCD skills that no one can ever take away from them for life, whereas with medication they're relying on the pill. Cognitive-behavioral therapy involving exposure and response prevention (ERP) is the preferred treatment for children and adolescents, according to 1997 Expert Consensus Guidelines, but few therapists are trained in its use. Individuals treated with ERP are taught to face their fears by engaging in repeated and prolonged confrontation with whatever stimuli evokes their obsession, and refraining from responding with compulsive behavior. For example, those who frequently wash their hands after opening doors -- because of their fear of germs would practice touching doorknobs without washing their hands afterwards. Or, those with an irrational fear of bad luck associated with the number 13 may repeatedly be taken to the 13th floor of a building. When ERP therapy is unavailable, refused, or does not have the intended effect, SSRIs represent a viable treatment strategy.
A significant body of evidence documented that the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and the head of caudate nucleus are involved in the mediation of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms. Potent serotonin (5-HT) reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the only antidepressant agents thus far shown to be effective in the treatment of OCD.

Medication for obsessive compulsive disorder - How to Treat
Medication most commonly used in obsessive compulsive disorder is the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) group of drugs such as fluoxetine. Prozac is the more widely available treatment for OCD. Patients may experience relapse upon discontinuation of their medication, however, so SSRI treatment is typically long-term. If you do use a SSRI for obsessive compulsive disorder, use the lowest effective dose.

I know when my brother's girlfriend was diagnosed in the late 80's research was just beginning to show how weather affected OCD. I would suggest a light monitor which can be several hundred dollars but most research supports its usage.

Also, would they consider seeing a chiropractor? I know of several families with children who have forms of anxiety which was lessened by regular visits to a chiropractor.

I am so sorry Joseph has to deal with this anxiety. He must be so frightened and feel so out of control. Would your friends consider the Prozac for a bit just to help him cope and get some rest? They could then work with a therapist on other methods of helping the OCD and wean him off the Prozac. This is what was done with my brother's girlfriend. She like Joseph was fine and then one day washed her hands for over six hours. It was a bizarre and scary time for she and my brother.

God bless. We will pray.

Marybeth

Christine,

First...please know Joseph is in my prayers...and I will ask my dd to pray especially for him. She knows how horrible this can be. Things became intense for my dd at age 9. Her handwashing was most severe at 11 and she still does struggle monthly (cycle related) some with OCD but she isn't debilitated anymore. She doesn't watch me prepare raw meat and doesn't wash her clothes with other family members...I remind my dh that if this is as good as it gets...we are in a good place

Homeopathy can bring quick results...I highly suggest it. I have travelled a long road with my dd and she had much more happening than OCD and has experienced terrible mental anguish for years...today she asked,"Do you really think people can do their purgatory on earth, mom?"....

Thank you for the replies and advice. I have told my friend to look at these responses. I will keep those whose families are affected by OCD in my prayers.

Christine - I know I posted this before elsewhere, but my SIL Cyndi has a son with OCD which they've been dealing with for years. She is a wealth of information and would be a good support - she is willing to talk with anyone who might want to. If you're interested in passing this on to your friend, please email me for my SIL's contact info.! joetritz@tznet.com

I have absolutely NO experience with OCD but I do know that several patients at my son's neurotherapist had it and were being treated successfully with a combination of neurofeedback and cognitive behavior modification therapy.

I did a quick google search and found an article on it here: http://www.louisemarks.com/MarksOCDarticle.html
