Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this system and can recommend it, or not.

My son is 6.5 and is starting first grade work next year. He has a visual-spatial processing issue, ADD (which is very mild and we've mostly done away with through neurofeedback therapy) and probably dyslexia although we are a little too early for a definitive diagnosis.

Some background: We started with Hooked on Phonics about a year and a half ago and only just now finished the first level. We were planning on sticking with HOP because we are seeing definite improvement in his phonetic decoding. The problem now is he is overly reliant on phonics and wants to sound out everything. This is in part because his disability makes it difficult for him to recognize sight words even when they are repeated on every page of a reader so he falls back on sounding out. We are also using MPC Phonics which he likes but his handwriting difficulties make doing the work laborious.

I spoke yesterday with a tutor recommended by his main Educational-Psychologist and she very strongly recommends Wilson Reading because of his dyslexia. Usually I'm willing to try anything that will work but at $400 a kit I'm a little hesitant to dive in particularly when what we are doing seems ok for now. I worry though that the HOP will not address the special issues inherent in dyslexic children adequately in later levels and then I will be behind the eight ball with his reading. Can you tell I'm a bit neurotic about all of this? Any advice or reviews of the program will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

Blessings,
Becky
