My DS 9 has never been formally diagnosed w/ ADD but you could ask any classroom teacher and diagnostician he's ever had experience with and they would say "if he would just focus...." Since no formal diagnosis, he's not on any meds but some days I reallllllly want to go there but then I feel like he needs to learn to cope! Is that mean? He has good days and bad days in regards to focusing...is that normal for ADD? Are they 50/50? I don't know...days like today are def. not happening 50% of the time where it's from sun-up to sundown that we've had issues.
Today has been exceptionally rough and now that our tree pollen has started up, we started him back on Zyrtec Sunday night along w/ Benadryl until the Zyrtec kicks in but so far there's still loads of sniffles, snot and dry cough. We've often wondered if his ears get clogged too but he's never mentioned his ears bothering him, however he does have some receptive/expressive speech problems so communicating is a challenge even on the best days. We're making sure he gets plenty of sleep and we're pretty mindful of his diet but SOMETIMES it seems like when his allergies kick in, things are even tougher. Is that possible? Why? I mean, the soccer couch even had to pull him aside tonight to tell him to pay attention!
It's been one of those days...

Allergies definately make things worse for any child regardless of other issues.. think of it as symptoms of ADD may also be symnptoms of allergies. If treating the allergies work then it may not be ADD.
extra vit C can help with allergies too

Should I give this to him as a vitamin supplement? He's not crazy about oranges/oj and so many other things w/ vitamin C are loaded w/ sugar. How would vit C help allergies?
Thanks!

I use the supplement Emergen-C to fight colds and allergies. It is the easiest form I have found to easily take and absorb high doses.
Allergies are a reaction of your immune system, and Vit C boosts your immune system, I think. Not sure exactly, but it does in fact help.

Yes, I understand that the allergic reaction depletes your body of vit C.. even to drawing it out of bones. And the less vit C the more severe the reaction is. I can control my hay fever with only vit. C supplements and rare instances of OTC meds needed.. maybe once a season or so.
The RDA is the minimum needed to prevent deficiency disease.. so that's a minimum number not a target number. I generally go with what "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by Balch says which is for children 70-100 lbs you want 3/4 of an adult dose and children under 70lbs but over 6 yrs, 1/2 the adult dose.
For vit C that same books says 1000-3000mg is the adult dose. I take up to 4000mg myself, you're not supposed to take over 5000mg when pregnant (and I seem to be more often than not ) but with prenatals having some vit C and such.. I limit myself to 4000mg of additional vit. C.

Symptoms of ADD can also be related to food allergies/sensitivities. Many people swear by the Feingold diet. worth looking into. I know my dd absolutely cannot tolerate most dyes, esp red dye.
Also, I have read of many children "diagnosed" with ADD who turned out to be sleep-deprived due to sleep apnea, enlarged tonsils/adenoids, etc. Seasonal allergies would definitely play a part there as well.
